Réduction des composés organiques volatilsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Due to the high content of thio-aminoacids, (i.e., methionine and cysteine) and the structural intermolecular disulfide bonds, this study has focused on new biopolymer keratin antioxidants. The antioxidant activity of keratin hydrolysates in polyethylene glycol (PEG) matrix has been studied using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under non-isothermal conditions. The experimental results have been evaluated and kinetic description of the oxidation induction periods have been carried out using the Bethelot-Hood temperature function. The length of induction periods has been assessed for all temperatures using the kinetic results. In order to compare the stabilizing effect of keratin hydrolysates, protection factors and antioxidant effectiveness have been calculated. The results have shown that the antioxidant activity of keratins strongly depends on the hydrolysis process. The protection factors decreased with increasing temperature and decreasing concentration of keratin. Based on our previous experience, we propose that the qualitative trend presented in this work can also be applied for other matrices than PEG. Keratin hydrolysates and their modifications with antioxidant properties significantly reduced formaldehyde emissions from urea-formaldehyde adhesives.

PhénolsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The antioxidative capacity of four different kraft lignins (KL) and one additional organosolv lignin (OSL) was studied using the Folin–Ciocalteu (FC) assay. To do so, the corresponding FC assay procedure was adapted and optimized to be appropriate for lignin analysis. Different solvents were tested, and DMSO and saturated sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) for pH adjustment showed the best results. The absorption wavelength of 740 nm was chosen due to highest determination coefficients. Continuous calibration is recommended on a daily basis to guarantee accuracy. The antioxidant capacity and related radical scavenging activity of various lignins were correlated with the biomass nature (soft wood vs grasses) and pulping methods (kraft vs organosolv). The results show higher antioxidant activity for kraft vs organosolv lignins. First lignin-derived polyurethane coatings were prepared using the unmodified kraft lignin. The films, prepared via spin coating, show a high flexibility and transparency. FullerènesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Fullerene is a molecule with a soccer ball-like structure consisting of 60 carbon atours, and is said to be the third carbon allotrope (after graphite and diamond) (Fig 1). Owing to its unique structure, it is chemically characterised by strong antioxidation and is anticipated to have various applications.' It is already being sold as a cosmetic raw material because of its antioxidant properties. Several clinical studies have reported its efficacy in reducing spots, wrinkles, and acne, which are thought to be associated with oxidative stress. Although it has been reported that oxidative stress is involved in alopecia areata, the link between hair growth and oxidative stress has not been found ; moreover the effects of substances with antioxidant properties, such as fullerene, are also unknown. Therefore, we conducted a single-blind clinical trial to determine how application of a tonic containing fullerene to human male scalps influences hair growth. Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Xanthophylls extracted from corn distillers’ dry grain were successfully applied to dye wool fabrics. As a readily available and cost-effective grain processing byproduct, corn distillers’ dry grain contains appreciable amounts of isolable xanthophyll colourants, which can potentially be used in textile coloration. However, the application of xanthophylls as textile colourants has been limited, possibly owing to their hydrophobic nature and lack of stability at higher temperatures. In the present work, dyeing of wool fabrics with xanthophyll dyes was performed in the presence of a solubilising agent (diglyme) and an antioxidant (butylated hydroxytoluene). Dyeing conditions were modelled and optimised by the one-factor-at-a-time method and response surface methodology. Depth of shade of the wool fabrics dyed with 0.33 g l?1 of xanthophylls could be as high as 10.9 ± 0.5, while the colour fastness to laundering and crocking was better than grade 4. The prominent effect of butylated hydroxytoluene on depth of shade (K/S) was further studied using functionally and structurally related model compounds. The K/S-enhancing ability of butylated hydroxytoluene was found to be a synergistic result of its antioxidising and complexing abilities. Lab-extracted xanthophylls of various purities were applied to wool fabrics using the optimised dyeing and aftertreatment conditions. Depth of shade but not colour fastness was significantly affected by the impurities in xanthophylls extracted from corn distillers’ dry grain. The strategy developed by this work not only extends the scope of xanthophyll application into textile coloration but also could be used for other hydrophobic and unstable natural colourants.
