With this precursor, two different crosslinked networks can be produced. A polyacrylate network can be produced using a radiation-cure mechanism while a polysiloxane network can be produced by hydrolysis and condensation reactions involving the trimethoxysilane groups. The objective of the study was to determine the utility of this dual-cure system for generating rapid-cure coatings for corrosion protection. Coating properties were determined as a function of cure conditions. The results of the study showed that the formation of siloxane crosslinks was significantly hindered by the crosslinked network induced by the UV-curing process. Even though the overall conversion of trimethoxysilane groups to siloxane crosslinks was relatively low, coating barrier properties were significantly enhanced and coating free volume reduced. At ambient conditions, additional crosslinking occurring through siloxane bond formation increased within the first 4 days after UV-curing. Beyond this period, siloxane bond formation remained unchanged as did coating properties. Note de contenu : - Materials

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Waterborne ultraviolet-curable polyurethane (WUPU) and its nanocomposites based on polycarbonate and α,ω-dihydroxy-[poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-poly(ε-caprolactone)] (PCL-PDMS-PCL) were synthesized using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), dimethyl propionic acid (DMPA), polycarbonate diol (PCD), PCL-PDMS-PCL, hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and aqueous colloidal silica. The resulting WUPU materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and rheometry. The effects of PCL-PDMS-PCL and silica on the colloidal, physicochemical, and surface properties of the WUPU and its nanocomposites were studied. It was found that incorporation of PCL-PDMS-PCL (10 wt%) significantly enhanced the Young’s modulus, tensile strength, surface hydrophobicity, and water resistance of the WUPU films due to microphase separation and better interfacial adhesion between the PDMS soft phase and urethane hard phase provided by the PCL blocks. Furthermore, incorporation of silica (10 wt%) further improved the modulus, tensile strength, and water resistance of the PCD-PCL-PDMS-PCL-WUPU films without degrading the high surface hydrophobicity or transparency, due to the homogeneous dispersion and network structure of the silica clusters in the WUPU matrix. Revêtements de solsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : UV curable field applied coatings for wood (restaurants, shops and residential settings), vinyl composite tile (VCT; hospitals and office buildings) and concrete (warehouses and factories) are in various stages of commercial development. For all these substrates, UV-cured coatings provide many advantages over conventional epoxy, polyurethane and related systems with respect to both application and performance properties. Improvements in both portable UV curing equipment and resin technologies are driving the further adoption of field applied UV-cured coatings in all of the above flooring applications. Most recently, new resins have been introduced that change colour to indicate both coating thickness and cure, increasing ease of application and providing greater efficiency and cost savings. It is interesting to note that though coatings have evolved and improved significantly over the last few decades, yielding faster cure, better properties, new pigment systems and gloss levels and safer materials, curing lamps has stayed basically the same. However, now that landscape is changing.
With the advent of new-intensity semiconductor UV light sources that can cure wide areas uniformly, radiation curing system customers now have access to clean, energy efficient, long life alternatives to traditional mercury lamp technology. As the new UV sources enter mass production, solid-state UV technology will revolutionise commercial processes like boat building, car repair, floor refinishing and other areas where a safe, portable easy-to-use UV source is critical.
The sources will also enable new applications for the first time. For example, low-temperature curing for temperature sensitive substrates, such as polyolefins is now enable, as is curing in areas where reduced green-house emissions and freedom from toxic waste generation are required.Note de contenu : - The problem with lamps
