Diffuse reflectance spectra measurements evidenced the shifting of the absorption peak toward visible region and the enlargement of absorption band (the so-called “tail” of the band). Absorbance spectra for a 20 ppm methylene blue (MB) solution, in the presence of 0.1% (wt%) doped TiO2NPs after 1 h under visible light irradiation, showed the high efficiency of the doping. Doped TiO2NPs were embedded in composites material based on acrylic binder, nitrocellulose lacquer, and pigmented paste and were used for leather surface finishing. Self-cleaning properties were confirmed by spectrophotometrical measurements and CIELab color coordinates recording for the degradation of MB spots applied to the treated leather surface exposed to UVA (λ = 365 nm) and visible light irradiation. Leather treated with Fe–N co-doped TiO2NPs presents the highest activity for MB spot degradation under visible light irradiation. The photographic images of MB dye spots and ball pen ink lines indicate a complete degradation after 30 h of exposure to visible light. Water contact angle measurements in dynamic conditions evidenced the photo-induced hydrophilicity process on functionalized leather surface, supporting the degradation phenomena through water and oxidative species generation.

Revêtements antisalissuresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : It is well established that crosslinked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based coatings have efficacious foul release characteristics. However, a trade-off between mechanical integrity of filled and crosslinked PDMS based coatings and their foul release performance has been a bottleneck for producing efficient and durable coatings. In the present study, we report a dual approach of nano-reinforcement of a bimodal PDMS network as a strategy to produce simultaneously reinforced and toughened PDMS networks with facile release of macrofoulants from their surfaces. The nanocomposites of both unimodal and bimodal PDMS networks were prepared using oligomeric dihydroxyl functional PDMS precursor chains differing in their molecular weights by a factor of five and commercial Cloisite-20A nanoclay as the nanofiller. The clay layers were found to be mildly intercalated in the PDMS matrix, as revealed from investigations by scattering and imaging techniques at different length scales. While the unimodal PDMS networks did show nanoclay induced simultaneous reinforcement and toughening, at equivalent clay loadings, the bimodal PDMS nanocomposites seemed to stretch further with characteristic strain hardening before fracture. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and swelling studies of the nancomposites further confirmed the nanoclay induced reinforcement effect of the bimodal PDMS host matrix. The intrinsic low surface energy characteristics of PDMS were retained by bimodal blending of long and short chains and its subsequent nano-reinforcement. Macrofouling studies by panel immersion and release force measurements revealed that the macrofoulants could be dislodged from the nanocomposite coatings with a shear force < 0.05 MPa. Durable ultraviolet (UV)-protective cotton fabric has great application potential in outdoor cotton clothing. In this study, oppositely charged TiO2 nanoparticles were deposited onto cotton fabric through the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, resulting in multilayer films with UV-protective properties. The mechanism of the technology has been investigated through characterization of the structure and properties using different techniques including FTIR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and a scanning electron microscope with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum. The results showed that TiO2 nanoparticles distributed uniformly on the surface of cotton fibers. The TGA results indicated that the TiO2 nanoparticles deposit on cotton fabrics had little effect on the thermal stability of cotton fabrics. The tensile strength and air permeability of the cotton samples were tested by a universal material testing machine and automatic ventilation instrument. The UV protection property of cotton fabric after assembled multilayer films was measured by an ultraviolet transmittance analyzer, and the laundering experiments were carried out to determine the durability of TiO2 nanoparticles on cotton fabric. The results showed that the UV protection property of cotton fabrics after assembled TiO2 nanoparticles was still maintained at a high level after five launderings.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Preparation of TiO2 nanoparticle suspension - Pretreatment of cotton fabrics - Multilayer assembly on cotton fabrics - Measurements and characterization
