Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of Cu2O nanoparticles (Cu2O NPs) modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPM) (m-Cu2O NPs) on the properties of a polysiloxane (PS) coating were investigated. The organic surface modifications improved the antimicrobial activity of the Cu2O NPs and their dispersion in a PS matrix. Due to the broad dispersion of the m-Cu2O NPs, the PS/m-Cu2O coating exhibited better mechanical properties and better thermal stability than unmodified Cu2O (u-Cu2O) coatings. The onset temperature of PS/m-Cu2O was 24 °C higher than that of the neat PS coating and 11 °C higher than that of the PS/u-Cu2O coating. The PS/m-Cu2O coating exhibited high antibacterial activity for sulfate-reducing bacterial strains, but the PS/m-Cu2O coating showed slight bacterial inhibition of Pseudomonas stutzeri B27 bacteria (which were isolated under seawater at Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam). Biofilm inhibition by the PS coatings with and without the m-Cu2O NPs was also tested with a natural seawater immersion test. After a 60-day test, the biofilm formed on the PS coating surface was ten times thicker than that on the PS/m-Cu2O coating. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) data and the surface properties of the coating indicated that immersion in natural seawater insignificantly affected the functional groups of the coating but had a substantial influence on the smoothness of the coating, which made the surface of the coating more hydrophilic. These results suggested that the PS/m-Cu2O could be used as an antifouling coating for the marine industry. Vernis en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cellulose nanocrystals were mixed into an aqueous UV-cured coating formulation in order to improve the mechanical properties of the coating. One of the key aspects in the technology of nanocomposites remains the dispersion of the nanoparticles within the matrix. To quantify the dispersion, efficient methods of characterization are needed. In this study, a new characterization method based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) and backscattering of laser light (He–Ne 632.8 nm) is applied to characterize such nanocomposite coatings. The angular distribution of backscattered light intensity was approximated by Gaussian distribution, and its standard deviation was used for the surface roughness analyses. A strong correlation between surface nano-roughness of coatings and angular distribution (half-width of the angular spread) of backscattered laser light was found. This laser characterization is faster and may be done without direct contact over a wider surface than AFM and may give us an idea about mechanical properties of coatings. This method can advance our fundamental understanding of dispersion of the nanoparticles in coatings and could be of use in quality control in industry.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A transparent hybrid organic–inorganic waterborne coating was evaluated for the protection of clay bricks. The nanocomposite film was prepared by combining an environmentally friendly process based on UV-curing of water-based acrylic resins and a mild thermal treatment to form nanosilica in situ from alkoxysilane precursors. Coated and uncoated facing bricks were compared by scanning electron microscopy, surface profilometry, water wettability, and capillary rise tests. The hybrid coatings act as a moderate water repellent; interestingly, no appreciable alteration of the aesthetic properties of the brick was observed, in particular no gloss or color change appeared after the treatment.

Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results confirmed that complete stereocomplex polylactide (PLA) crystallites without any homocrystallites were produced when equal amounts of PLLA and PLDA were mixed. The nanoclay in the stereocomplex polylactide nanocomposites acted as a nucleating agent that significantly enhanced stereocomplex crystallization, resulting in smaller and finer spherulites. Compared to neat PLLA, the melting temperature of the stereocomplex polylactide and its nanocomposites was about 55°C higher. The crystallization temperature of the stereocomplex nanocomposites was also 16°C and 55°C higher than that of the stereocomplex PLA and neat PLLA, respectively. These significant increases in transition temperatures improved the thermal stability of the stereocomplex nanocomposites compared to regular polylactide, which was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The TGA results also showed that increasing nanoclay content increased the thermal stability of the stereocomplex nanocomposites. Finally, XRD and transmission electron microscopy showed an intercalation nanoclay basal spacing of 3.22 nm in the stereocomplex nanocomposites; a slight increase from the 1.86 nm basal spacing in the as-received nanoclay. PolyacryliquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Tetrapod-like nano-ZnO whiskers were prepared by physical method. For small size and surface effect of nano materials, aggregation tendency should be resolved before practical application. Hence, different dispersing methods were designed and examined. Nano-ZnO/acrylic resin composite coatings were prepared to form nano-functional coatings. It was observed that the composite with uniform distribution of nano-ZnO in the acrylic resin had multifunctionalities. Different treatment methods for tetrapod-like nano-ZnO whiskers demonstrate an intensified affect on the final functional effects of composite coatings. The coatings can be used for plastic materials, etc. Furthermore, the mechanisms of the functions were also analyzed for the sake of understanding.
