Tests d'efficacitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : External thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) have been extensively applied on building façades with the aim of implementing the thermal and aesthetical properties of the building envelope. However, the formation of stains and deposition of particulate matter is often observed in the surface of these systems. The use of multifunctional products with self-cleaning properties can reduce surface anomalies and thus enhance the durability of ETICS. This study aims at evaluating the effectiveness of three protective coatings with self-cleaning additives (i.e., TiO2 nanoparticles), when applied on the surface of ETICS. Three different stains (rhodamine, methylene blue and silver paint aerosol) were applied on the ETICS finishing coat, evaluating the removal of these stains after exposure to natural (solar radiation) light source. The surface properties (compactness, hardness, roughness, gloss, and color) of the ETICS were evaluated prior and after sun exposure. Results showed that the application of the three products lead to a modification of the surface properties (compactness, hardness, gloss, roughness) of the ETICS specimens, and sensibly enhance the self-cleaning, hydrophobic and aesthetical properties of the ETICS.
PhotocatalyseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Titanium dioxide (Ti02) is well known for its photocatalytic capabilities, and its applications coverl different areas, such as wastewater treatment, sunscreen and ultraviolet (UV) blocking, among others. Its application as a photocatalytic additive for self-cleaning properties has been reported with different substrates, resulting in stain degradation. As such, the goal of this work was to functionalise two types of nubuck leather, conferring on them self-cleaning properties. For this purpose, two photocatalytic materials were tested: a commercial TiO2 (Degussa P25 Ti02) and Si02@Ti02 nanoparticles, which were applied onto leather surfaces by a spray coating technique. The hydrophilic behaviour of these two types of nubuck leather was determined by contact angle (CA) measurement, using the sessile drop technique. The finished samples of nubuck leather were characterized by measuring their diffuse reflectance. The self-cleaning properties of finished nubuck leather samples were evaluated through their ability to photodegrade an organic stain, rhodamine-B dye. The P25 TiO2 and Si02@TiO2 particles did not provide self-cleaning properties for the two types of nubuck leather, indicating the need for more in-depth research on the use of these particles for self-cleaning purposes.
(Wikipedia)

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effect of corrosion protection performance of epoxy coatings containing magnesium (Mg) nanoparticles on carbon steel was analyzed using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Localized measurements such as oxygen consumption and iron dissolution were observed using SECM in 0.1 M NaCl in the epoxy-coated sample. Line profile and topographic image analysis were measured by applying −0.70 and +0.60 V vs the Ag/AgCl/saturated KCl reference electrode as the tip potential for the cathodic and anodic reactions, respectively. The tip current at −0.70 V for the epoxy-coated sample with Mg nanoparticles decreased rapidly, which is due to cathodic reduction in dissolved oxygen. The EIS measurements were conducted in 0.1 M NaCl after wet and dry cyclic corrosion test. The increase in the film resistance (Rf) and charge transfer resistance (Rct) values was confirmed by the addition of Mg nanoparticles in the epoxy coating. Scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope analysis showed that Mg was enriched in corrosion products at a scratched area of the coated steel after corrosion testing. Focused ion beam–transmission electron microscope analysis confirmed the presence of the nanoscale oxide layer of Mg in the rust of the steel, which had a beneficial effect on the corrosion resistance of coated steel by forming protective corrosion products in the wet/dry cyclic test.
