Calcium carbonate, which is generally used in systems of this king, acts only as a filler and has no functional component. The aim of this study is to identify fillers which can improve ther performance of adhesives when compared with the substances traditionally used. Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Melt extrusion of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) is desirable over commonly practiced solution film casting due to reduced energy input, environmental footprint, and processing cost, however, melt extrusion processing of plasticized polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) presents a significant processing challenge due to inherent adhension issues of extruded PVOH film to the surface of equipment. This paper reports a method using inorganic fillers such as CaCO3and talc to facilitate the plasticized PVOH processing for blown films. Parameters are also identified for additional process studies to optimize the mechanical properties of blown films. It was found that the preferred inorganic filler is CaCO3for the PVOH stickiness reduction. The filled PVOH films were found to have delayed or reduced water solubility. It takes about 7 to 10 minutes for the filled PVOH films to dissolve in water whereas the neat PVOH films are soluble in water instantly. The delayed water solubility may be desirable for certain specialty applications such as packaging of pesticides during shipping and storage. With improved processability by incorporating filler, the melt extrusion produced PVOH film should cost less than the solution-cast PVOH films. While the time-honored “weight ratios” are typically used to formulate pigmented coatings for paper, pigment volume concentration (or alternatively, % void volume) has been found to be much more useful in determining the interactions of pigments with the adhesive on the properties of such aqueous coatings. In this study, slurries of commercial kaolin clay and ground calcium carbonate pigments used in papermaking applications were blended and then centrifuged to determine the maximum packing efficiency of the pigments. Isolated films of coatings made from selected pigment blends and increasing levels of latex adhesive were tested for void volume percentage and tensile modulus. Based on these results, a regression equation between pigment interstitial space and the mechanical strength of different coating films was established.

ThermochimieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This work focuses on the investigation of the fire protection of steel using inorganic intumescent alkali silicate and geopolymer (alkali aluminosilicate) coatings at temperatures relevant for hydrocarbon fires, as described in the UL1709 standard. Pure alkali silicate coatings based on Na, K, or a mixture of these with Li exhibited high initial expansion followed by melting. In comparison, Li-silicate coatings expanded less but demonstrated significantly higher thermal stability. Increasing the SiO2/Na2O molar ratio prolonged the fire protection time, explained by the lower melt formation proposed by global equilibrium calculations. The presence of melting in the high expanding alkali silicate systems limits their use in hydrocarbon fire conditions. In comparison to pure alkali silicates, geopolymer coatings with kaolin, metakaolin, and fly ash and additional CaCO3 displayed a higher thermal stability confirmed by global equilibrium calculations. The kaolin-based coating provided the best fire protection with a critical time of 37.6 min, explained by its high expansion compared to metakaolin and fly ash-based coatings. Examining the influence of CaCO3 and kaolin content suggests that an optimum exists for the kaolin coatings in terms of expansion, fire protection, and thermal stability. The best performing kaolin coating (37.6 min) had a lower fire protection compared to a state-of-the-art commercial organic hydrocarbon coating (44.2 min), caused by their differences in internal structure. The commercial coating expanded to a more compact microporous solid, while the kaolin coating qualitatively displayed a higher proportion of macropores. This in turn suggests that future work must be performed to further improve the internal structure of the kaolin-based coatings to ensure good fire protection.
