Many of the finished leather manufacturers source their wet blue leathers from various regions or tanners. In order to have uniformity of metal oxide content, almost all the leathers are rechromed. For this, the industry employs masked chromium(III) salts provided by the leather auxiliary industry in the form of complexes co-linked to phenol/ naphthalene condensates. Also, tanners who use hides/skins from ill fed animals treat their tanned substrate with melamine condensates, so as to get a preferential filling of the belly region. Metal ion complexes co-linked to melamine condensates are rather scarce. For the first time, this paper reports the application studies using a chromium melamine condensate devoid of formaldehyde as cross linker. The said product has been employed in rechroming and evaluated for multiple properties such as providing an equalization of chrome content and filling of belly region. Our studies clearly indicate a marked advantage of employing such a product in the place of commercial chrome syntans alongside melamine condensates, more so for ill fed cowhides. Tannage Résumé : Chrome tanning is essential for conventional processing of dyed sheep fur as it can provide fur with high hydrothermal stability suitable for dyeing of wool at a temperature around 70°C. However, a long float length and a big offer of chrome tanning agent (16 g/L) are required for the tanning process, which lead to poor uptake of chrome and excessive discharge of chrome in wastewater. In this study, reduction of chrome offer in dyed sheep fur production was investigated to develop a cleaner tanning technology. It was found that the even distribution of chrome and satisfactory dispersion of fur collagen matrix were achieved even though chrome tanning agent offer was reduced to 2 g/L and 4 g/L. But the shrinkage temperature of the furs was only 79°C and 85°C, respectively, which resulted in a sharp area shrink of fur in following high temperature dyeing. In the combination tannage using 10 g/L amphoteric organic tanning agent (TWT) and 2 g/L or 4 g/L chrome tanning agent, the shrinkage temperature of fur was higher than 90°C accompanied by a higher utilization of chrome. These combination tanned furs were capable of enduring dyeing process at 68°C for 8 h, and presented a high uptake of post tanning chemicals because they had an isoelectric point close to that of chrome tanned fur. More importantly, the physical properties of the combination tanned dyed furs were comparable to the dyed fur made by conventional chrome tanning using 16 g/L chrome tanning agent.

Varieties of chemicals are used to process the raw skin into leather and these chemicals cause pollution problems in the resulting effluent. The leather industries are forced to adopt cleaner technological options to prevent the pollution problems. Enzyme based technologies are viable, eco-friendly and form alternative to the existing technologies. Similarly the solid waste generated in the leather processing operation also generates pollution problem and its utilization or conversion into useful end product is imperative for the cleaner environment. The solid wastes such as raw trimmings, fleshings, chrome shavings, buffing dusts and keratin wastes are converted into useful end product by means of enzymatic/chemical treatment. Thus the aim of the work is to highlight the cleaner technological options for leather and its wastes for various benefiters such as tanners, Poultry feed food industries, fertilizer industries and leather chemical industries.
(Wikipedia)

UréeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the beamhouse, liming might directly affect the structure and performance of collagen, as well as the quality of resultant leather. However, the influences of composition and content of liming agents on liming mechanism are quite complicated. In this study, calcium hydroxide and urea were utilized in liming. The solution pH, hide swelling ratio and non-collagenous protein removal were quantitatively analyzed. The morphologies of both limed and fresh hides were studied by optical microscopy. The reaction mechanism of fiber opening up of cattle hides was analyzed and speculated by the combination of thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. It was found that the fiber bundles of hides limed by urea/calcium hydroxide have a better opening up effect than that by pure calcium hydroxide. The mechanism of liming in an urea/calcium hydroxide solution system was proposed. Teinture -- Fibres textiles synthétiquesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Electrospun nanofibrous mats are popular for their wide technological applications as medical, filtration, sensing and high performance textiles. The potential for coloration of electrospun nanofibrous mats for aesthetic purposes has also been explored recently, and the pigment coloration of cellulose electrospun nanofibrous mats is reported for the first time in this paper. Cellulose acetate electrospun nanofibrous mats were fabricated using electrospinning followed by treatment with sodium hydroxide to synthesise regenerated cellulose electrospun nanofibrous mats. Then the cellulose mats were coloured with commercially available pigments by a pad‐dry‐bake method. Excellent K/S and colour fastness to both washing and light were produced with the application of three commercial pigments. The pH and total dissolved solids content of the coloration wastewater, as well as the mechanical properties of the electrospun nanofibrous mats, were also tested. Attenuated total reflection‐Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis were used for characterisation.
