Technique de superposition de maillageIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this contribution, the fluid flow and mixing dynamics inside planetary roller extruders are simulated using the finite element method (FEM) and the mesh superposition technique (MST). Three-dimensional configurations with planetary spindles of varying number and geometry of planetary spindles were created to analyse the influence of the spindle configuration and the rotational speed on the process behavior. Therefore, pressure gradients, flow velocities and directions, shear rates, the mixing index and residence time distributions were evaluated. The distributive and dispersive mixing efficiencies varied depending on the planetary spindle configuration, and these configurations thus suit different processing tasks. In comparison to the standard planetary spindles, the TT3 spindles, with their incomplete toothing, and the knob spindles, with their double transversal helical toothing, showed intense axial and radial mixing. In general, the mixing performance of the planetary roller extruder is explained by a high rate of extensional flow and frequent changes in flow type. The reported numerical approach allows, for the first time, a comprehensive observation of the process behavior of planetary roller extruders. Note de contenu : - Simulation methods

Simulation par ordinateurIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A novel simulation technique for the flow in plastic mixers based on Element-free Galerkin Method (EFGM) has been developed in this study. To improve the simulation accuracy, a “rearrangement” scheme has been employed which eliminates errors caused by the irregular distribution of data points. Through several numerical tests, the new simulation technique has been validated to be applicable to high viscosity fluid flow with enough accuracy. Furthermore, simulation examples for realistic mixers were carried out using the developed technique. From the results, it was found that the developed technique is capable to investigate the relationship between flow behavior inside realistic mixers and operating conditions.

PolymèresIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : During the last quarter of the 20th century, there was a transition from batch to continuous mixing in the polymer and food industries. We present and summarize experimental studies of flows in both internal and continuous mixers. Simulation of flow in these machines is also described. It is argued that the primary reason for this transition was that continuous mixers produce more uniform and better quality mixes, and that this is inherent in their different fluid mechanics. Batch mixers are always starved and largely unpressurized. Their complex fluid mechanics produce non-uniform mixing in the various portions of the compound material. Continuous mixers set up a steady state hydrodynamic flow field generally consisting of alternating regions of pressurized fully filled flow and starved flow. All of the compounds must pass through these regions to reach the die exit and thus possess uniform mixing histories. This uniform deformation history which includes pressurized mixing regions produces superior uniform products.
