Tannage Résumé : A compleximetric method involving titration of zirconium with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) is described which is applicable to the analysis of solid reagents, solutions or tanned leathers containing either zirconium or mixed zirconium—chromium complexes. The method is rapid, reliable and more convenient to use, especially for routine analyses, than alternative gravimetric methods of analysis. It has been shown that, in mixed zirconium—chromium systems, there is no interference either in the determina¬tion of zirconium by the chromium present, or in the normal determination of chromium by the zirconium present. Température de retraitIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The potential toxicity and environmental impact of chromium and tannins discharged from a tannery has become a key issue, in particular the wastewater generated from the semi-chrome process presents a problem of separating chromium from vegetable tannins by conventional precipitation. This work reports the removal of tannins and recovery of chromium from a spent semi-chrome wastewater using chrome shavings as the adsorbent. Batch mode treatment studies have been carried out to standardize the duration, quantity of chrome shaving and pH. A tannin removal efficiency of 96% has been observed. The tannin-free chromium bearing liquor after the adsorption process was subjected to conventional chromium recovery and re-use and was then used for tanning as a 40% replacement of commercial basic chromium sulphate. The tannin containing chrome shavings were used as a reductant for the preparation of basic chromium sulphate and this was also used for tanning trials. Tanning studies reveal that the quality of the wet blue leathers is on a par with leathers tanned with commercial BCS. Shrinkage temperatures and performance of the leathers, in comparison to a conventional leather, are comparable. Exhaustion of chromium was similar. The procedure described offers a viable solution for the removal of tannins and recovery/reuse of chromium from semi-chrome wastewater, as well as for the disposal of solid wastes such as chrome shavings. UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The length of the soaking process plays a vital role in leather making; prolonged soaking may encourage putrefaction of the skin, thus there is a need to improve the efficiency of the soaking process. Power ultrasound has been employed with the aim of shortening process time. Two types of equipment were used, an ultrasonic cleaner (33 kHz) and an ultrasonic probe (20 kHz) in comparative experiments with static soaking. The efficiency of the soaking process was evaluated in terms of the removal of solids from wet-salted skin - a combination of salt, dirt, blood and soluble protein. We also studied the rate of water uptake of air-dried skins.
The results showed a 44% increase in solids removal by ultrasound in 1 hour soaking of wet salted goat skin. In the case of air-dried skins ultrasound reduced the soaking time by up to 75%. Analysis of the hydroxyproline content in the spent soak liquor indicates that the skin material is not adversely affected by ultrasound in soaking.
Efficiency of the soaking process has been evaluated from the removal of total solids from the wet-salted skin comprising salt, dirt, blood and soluble proteins. The rate of uptake of water in case of air-dried skins during the soaking process has also been studied ; the results show that soaking in the presence of ultrasound could reduce the soaking time by up to 75%.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Ultrasonic set-up
