Process optimization was done by varying the nano-emulsion and deactivator concentration to achieve desired water resistance. The optimized recipe for making jute water repellent with minimal damage in tensile properties was 30 g/1 wax-based nano-emulsion and 3 g/1 aluminum chloride. The application on jute fabric was carried out by pad—dry-cure method to achieve adequate water repellence, which was durable for up to 5 home laundry washes Note de contenu : - MATERIALS

Textiles et tissusIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water repellency is a desired feature of fabrics for certain applications in textile industry such as water-repellent garments, tents, and umbrellas. Coating of fabrics with fluorocarbons or silicones followed by heat treatment is the general process to impart hydrophobicity even though the resulted water repellency is limited. In this study, we prepare a fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating from hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles that can be easily applied to common fabrics by simply spray coating, leading to superhydrophobic fabrics with a water contact angle of 172° and a sliding angle of 3°. The process to achieve extreme water repellency is simple and only involves a single step, and there is no need for further processes like annealing or heat treatment. The superhydrophobic coated fabrics display durability dependence on the texture of the underlying material, where coated chenille and nonwoven fabrics show robust mechanical durability against water impact, abrasion, and laundering. The ready availability of the coating materials, the simple process of application, and the robust mechanical durability of superhydrophobic fabrics show great potential for real-world applications. Capillaries draw water from the soifs beneath a building against the force of gravity leading to damp zones at the base of walls.
The study revealed that failure to use damp-proof membrane or course, presence of groundwater, porosity of masonry, and concrete element sand flooding were the main causes of rising dampness. Undersetting and saw slotting, making good plumbing leakages, using approved waterproof chemical injection, and application of admixtures were the main measures recommended to aven rising dampness.Note de contenu : - Damp proof course treatment : Concept of damp proofing - Causes of dampness in buildings - : 1. Revêtements protecteurs -- DétériorationIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface coating is the most widely used measure in engineering projects for protecting concrete against sewage attack. In this study, three types of conventional surface coating, including epoxy coal tar pitch coating (ECTPC), cement-based capillary crystalline waterproofing coating (CCCWC), and cement-based bactericidal coating (CBC) were examined for such purpose, and their performance of resisting sewage, water, acid, abrasion, and microbial erosion was investigated. Moreover, the gray theory method was adopted to find out the primary index of coatings that affected their protection of concrete against sewage-induced degradation (SID). The results revealed that ECTPC provided the best protection for concrete against sewage attack, due to the joint effects of its water resistance, resistance to flow erosion and bactericidal function. For the two inorganic coatings, there was no apparent difference between them in the bond strength and wear time. Although the water resistance of CCCWC was better than that of CBC, its resistance to sewage attack was worse. This was mainly attributed to the bactericide component in CBC, only a small number of cells can be observed in the attached biofilm layer. The gray correlation analysis indicates that the resistance to microbial growth of coating is the most critical factor of the SID of concrete. Also, the coatings acid resistance had the lowest correlation degree with its resistance to SID. Therefore, the effect of killing microorganisms at the origin is better than that of preventing or slowing down the penetration of sewage. These findings can be used to guide the selection of coatings in concrete sewers to control SID. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Concrete specimens - Surface coatings - Test methods
