Tannage Résumé : Retanning is one of the essential steps in leather processing. It follows the primary tanning process, utilizing synthetic tanning agents (syntans) in order to impart certain functional properties to the final leather. This research study aimed at investigating the effect of ultrasound (US) on the uptake of syntans in the retanning process as compared to magnetic stirring (MS) process control. Different types of syntans based on phenolic, melamine resin and acrylic compound were investigated. The influence of process parameters such as US power, process time, float, syntan offer, US pulse mode were studied. The effects of pre-sonication of substrate (leather) as well as substance (syntan solution though particle size analysis) were also investigated. There was the possibility of about 10% to 60% increase in exhaustion due to the use of US over MS for different syntans under various process conditions. The Apparent Diffusion coefficient (D) of syntan through the leather matrix was calculated from the experimental uptake data, which indicates significant improvement (~1.5 times) in the D value due to US over MS under the given process conditions. Therefore, the present study clearly indicates positive influence of ultrasound on diffusion of these special types of organic compounds (syntans) through more complex porous matrix such as leather, leading to significant improvements in diffusion rate of syntans, considerable savings in process time and subsequent enhancement in the quality of retanned leathers.

UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The current study elaborates on the capabilities of ultrasonic waves in improving the conventional method for analysis of banned aromatic amines in dyed textile samples. Wool, linen and cotton were dyed according to their relative affinity with a selected benzidine-based dye, CI Direct Red 28. The standard procedure, BS EN 14362-1:2012, was used for testing dyed textile samples, with final estimation through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The dyed samples, after reduction, released a significant quantity of benzidine (listed banned amine), hence were chosen for experiments with ultrasound-assisted reduction (UAR). To explore the influence of ultrasound energy on the reduction of bis azo dye, the standard procedure for analysis of banned aromatic amines in textiles was modified incorporating minor changes. The reduction step in the altered methods was performed with ultrasonic aid in less time, while the rest of the method remained unmodified. The altered procedure was designated as “method 2”. Samples were quantified with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The extent of the reduction was correlated with wetting characteristics of textile materials. The results from the standard test procedure were used for comparison with those obtained from UAR trials. The UAR method in the case of wool, assessed in terms of greenness, provided noticeable time and energy savings. A comparative account of the chosen matrices with respect to dye reduction is also presented. UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Ultrasound extraction of valonea tannin from the acorn cups of the Quercus species was investigated and compared to the conventional extraction method. Effects of ultrasonic power, time and temperature on extraction were examined. Considering the highest extraction yields and tannin contents of two extraction methods, it was found out that ultrasound extraction result in 17.16% increase in extraction yield and 6.61% in tannin amount. Additionally, apart from the temperature study, the sound effect on extraction yields that occurred during ultrasound extractions was also determined. The results were evaluated statistically by using One-Way ANOVA and Duncan tests with the SPSS 15 statistic program. The results showed that ultrasonic extraction method can be used as an alternative to conventional method for extraction of tannin (valonea) from acorn cups.
