UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Polyurethane sandwich structures are very useful in construction because of their excellent thermal insulating properties. Even though the chemicophysical processes occurring inside the production line crucially affect the quality of the final product, up to now, they are not monitored at all. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present a new fundamental approach for non-invasively monitoring these processes online by using air-coupled, low-frequency ultrasonic plate waves ("Lamb waves"). Hereby, a foaming cell incorporating the ultrasonic unit was constructed on a laboratory scale. Then, sandwich structures were fabricated with polyurethane consisting of various ratios of the educts di-isocyanate and polyol. Air, instead of liquid was used as the coupling medium to transport the ultrasonic waves that were subsequently monitored. For comparison, tensile strength and microscopic images were analyzed. Most importantly, various wave amplitudes and phases were recorded depending on the actual chemical properties of the polyurethane and its physical state. Consequently, this technique permits the direct and non-invasive tracking of the foaming process thereby avoiding expensive panel replacements. UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Currently, hides and leather are visually inspected and ranked for quality, sale price and usable area. Visual inspection is not always reliable for detecting defects, particularly when they are hidden inside the material. This manual assessment is non-uniform among operators, and often leads to disputes over fair price. Development of a nondestructive method to accurately evaluate the quality of hides and leather is needed. We have investigated airborne ultrasonic (AU) testing using non-contact sensors for the nondestructive evaluation of hides and leather. The AU test system is an ideal inspection method for large hides or leather and is designed for automated and moving process applications. The AU sensors are mounted on a computer-controlled X-Y scanner that allows the sensor array to be moved over the entire surface of the hide. The AU testing involves pulsing ultrasonic signals and measuring the amplitude of those signals that traveled through the material. This research examines the ability of AU techniques to reveal defects in hides and leather that are difficult to be found during visual inspection. The key for success in AU testing is to use AU sensors with low resonant frequencies, which leads an effective penetration of waves through the leather or hides. Observation showed that test areas with different amplitudes in the C-scans obtained from AU testing is an indication of the presence of defects or some other physical discontinuity that could affect the hides or leather quality. Using the AU C-scan images could advance the industry in how it assesses and grades raw hides, wet blue, wet white and finished leather. Preparations of fatliquor-emulsions as well as fatliquoring of leathers were carried out in presence of ultrasound. Ultrasound aids in reducing the size of fatliquor emulsion and increasing fat content of leather. It was found that the particle size of fatliquor emulsion was reduced by more than 22% and fat contents of leather were increased up to 40% due to using ultrasound. Moreover, smooth penetration and uniform distribution of fat in the processed leathers were observed. Physical properties of both ultrasoundassisted fatliquored leather and conventionally fatliquored leather were also studied in detail. Tensile strength, stitch tearing strength, tongue tearing strength, grain crack load, ball bursting load, Bauman tear strength, color fastness and perspiration of ultrasound assisted fatliquored leather were better compared to that of without ultrasound. Twenty leathers samples were successively colored with this method in a laboratory scale trial. The dye exhaustion (%), the color values and the color rub fastnesses were determined. Also, the grain surface and the cross-section of the leathers were analyzed before and after dyeing. As presented, it only required 5 minutes to color with this method and the dye exhaustions averaged 2.3%, helpful for the recycling of the dye solution. The color for the test group of ten leathers varied within a small range ( ?E <1) when the solution was directly recycled without dye replenishment. The color fastnesses reached as much as the 4-5 dry rub scale and 3 wet rub scale after the leathers were coated with a typical shoe upper finishing formula. Furthermore, the grain and the collagen fibers were not significantly damaged during the dyeing process as demonstrated by Scanning Electron Microscope and X-ray diffraction analysis. In summary, this clean and quick dyeing could be considered a potential option for leather dyeing.
