RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Acrylic and styrene/acrylic latex binders comprising functional monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methacrylamide, methyl methacrylate, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate in different concentration levels were synthesised. It was shown that the extent of particle swelling and the hydroplasticisation of the alkali-swellable particles was affected by the polarity of the ‘hard’ comonomer. The effect of dissociated carboxylic groups on the increase in latex viscosity and on the lowering of its minimum film-forming temperature was much more pronounced in the case of the methyl methacrylate comonomer. The thickening of the latices with hydrophobe-modified ethylene oxide urethane (HEUR) associative thickeners was considerably affected by the hydrophobicity of the particles. Thickening with hydrophically-modified alkali-soluble emulsion (HASE) thickeners depends predominantly on the excluded volume of swollen thickener particles. The influence of the hydrophobic styrene content was negligible. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Monomers - Thickeners - Standard polymerisation recipe

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In biodegradable polymer world nanobiocomposites represent a new group of materials filled with inert nanoparticles that shows very interesting properties and the biodegradability of the matrix. In this work we have studied the effect of the polarity of the organomodified montmorillonite and of the elongational flow on the morphology and the rheological and mechanical properties of a new nanobiocomposite with a matrix of biodegradable PLA based blend. The elastic modulus enhances in presence of the nanofiller and this increase is larger and larger with the increment of the orientation. The tensile strength does not show any significant change at the same level of orientation. Moreover, a brittle-to-ductile transition is observed in the anisotropic sample and this effect is again more evident for the nanocomposite. The raise of the interlayer distance is higher for the more polar montmorillonite, even if the two nanocomposites show about the same final interlayer distance and morphology. Some exfoliation is also observed as a result of the application of the elongational flow. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the capillary extrusion behavior of low-density polyethylene (PE) was investigated. From the linear viscoelasticity and the morphology observation, it was found that the CNTs were well dispersed throughout the PE matrix and our system belonged to the semi-dilute regime. The strain hardening, which quantifies the extension of the PE chain, decreased by presence of CNTs in the uniaxial elongational deformation. In contrast, the normal stress difference was almost unaffected by CNTs in the shear deformation. The capillary extrusion behavior revealed that swell ratio decreased with increasing the CNT content although melt fracture was promoted. We summarize that the suppression of swell and promotion of melt fracture are attributable to the orientation of CNTs. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Measurements

Alkoxysilane functional alkyds and tung oil-based reactive diluents were synthesized and used as additives in varying amounts in alkyd coatings. Looking at modified alkyd versus modified reactive diluent allows for the comparison of the humidity effect on high and low molecular weight alkoxysilane functional additives. The coatings were cured at 25 and 75% relative humidity and evaluated for drying time, coating and tensile properties, and gel content. It was found that at higher humidity, the alkoxysilane-containing samples improved properties significantly when compared to the control alkyd. - Methods : Formulation morphology was investigated using cryo-transmission electron microscopy. Stability of the employed formulations was determined by photon correlation spectroscopy, measurement of pH and rheological properties. Effect on physiological skin parameters was evaluated during regular application over four weeks in a parallel group study (n = 15, healthy forearm skin) with a Corneometer, Sebumeter, skin-pH-Meter, Aquaflux and an Epsilon sensor. Confocal Raman spectroscopy was employed to monitor urea and NMF levels.
- Results : Both submicron emulsions and gels showed satisfying storage stability irrespective of cyclodextrin incorporation. No statistically significant effects on skin barrier function and any of the observed parameters were obtained, indicating good skin tolerability of all tested formulations.
- Conclusion : Results suggest good skin tolerability of the developed cosmetic submicron emulsions and gels with HP-β-CD.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Preparation of formulations - Characterization and stability of the employed formulations - Cryo-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) - Mean droplet size, PDI and pH - Rheological properties - Effect of formulations on skin parameters: study design - Effect of formulations on skin parameters: biophysical analysis - Confocal Raman spectroscopy (CRS) - Calculation of skin parameter changes - Statistical analysis
