The results clearly showed that acid degradation and oxidative degradation significantly reduced both the molecular and particle size of native starch. The Maillard reaction occurred during the preparation of GS. The two kinds of denatured starch and several typical fillers were applied to chrome-tanned crust leather. The contrasting results of filling showed that GS had some obvious characteristics different from those of other fillers. The leather sample filled with denatured starch-gelatine complex GS showed obvious thickening, excellent tensile strength and tear strength, as well as moderate softness. The leather sample filled with OS exhibited moderate tensile strength and tear strength, as well as excellent elongation. GS and OS effectively separated fibre bundles and thus had favourable prospects for improving the sensory characteristics of chrome leather.
Quebracho est l'un des noms communs, en espagnol, d'au moins trois espèces similaires d'arbres originaires du Gran Chaco, en Amérique latine : Schinopsis lorentzii (quebracho colorado santiagueño), de la famille des Anacardiaceae ; Schinopsis balansae (quebracho colorado chaqueño), de la même famille ;

Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : We have demonstrated the effectiveness of enzymatic and chemical modification of waste protein from leather, used alone or in combination with protein from the dairy industry, in preparation of fillers for leather treatment. We are continuing to build on these techniques to make products from sustainable resources that can enhance retanned leather. Vegetable tanning, utilizing polyphenols extracted from plant materials, is used primarily for production of heavy leathers for saddles, belts and shoe soles. Recently, the polyphenolic acids involved in vegetable tannage have been investigated extensively for their ability to modify gelatin. We explored whether gelatin, when modified using polyphenols, could give products with properties that might have application in leather processing. In our initial studies, before we investigated individual polyphenolic acids, we tested tannins, e.g. quebracho, to see if indeed these vegetable tannins themselves could be used in crosslinking. These studies demonstrated that gelatin could be modified, using quebracho, to make products that had varying physical properties such as high melting points and viscosities and that molecular weight determinations showed an extensive alteration in gelatin profile. These products were applied to blue stock as fillers and the resultant leather showed improved subjective properties and no significant differences in mechanical properties between treated and control samples. Thus a byproduct (gelatin) from leather-making process, modified with a common polyphenolic tanning agent (quebracho), can be employed to improve crust leather products in the retanning, coloring and fatliquoring process.
Surfaces (Physique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This study employed solid hot stretching technology to produce successfully specifically oriented polylactic acid (PLA) while investigating the impact of orientation structure on its photo-oxidation aging properties. After orientation, the molecular weight and mechanical properties retention rate of PLA were improved, and the crystallinity (Xc) increased in conjunction with prolonged aging time, while the molecular orientation failed to modify the mechanism responsible for PLA deterioration. Furthermore, an examination regarding the way in which the photo-oxidation stability of PLA was enhanced, demonstrated that the increased Xc and structural orientation were beneficial for delaying the photo-oxidation aging of PLA. Poussière de cuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Buffing dust (BD) is generated in the buffing process of leather making. Amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer (HBPN) was used to modify the BD to prepare hyperbranched polymer modified BD (HBPN-B). The molecular weight of HBPN was analysed by GPC and FTIR, SEM-EDS and BET analysis were employed to characterise the structure of the HBPN-B. The BET specific surface area of HBPN-B was 7.128m2.g-1. The EDS analysis results show that after modification, the N content of BD increased from 21.23% to 24.47%. HBPN-B was then used in the adsorption of dye from wastewater. The influences of reaction conditions on the adsorption properties of HBPN-B towards acid fuchsin were studied and the adsorption kinetic and isotherm were researched. The removal rate of acid fuchsin by HBPN-B increased with the increase of pH, the removal rate reached the maximum at pH2.5. Electrostatic attraction was the chief adsorption mechanism. The removal rate increased with the increase of HBPN-B dosage and temperature. The adsorption process was in conformity with pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model adsorption. TannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : One of our research endeavors to address ongoing challenges faced by the U.S. hide and leather industries is to develop innovative uses and novel biobased products from hides to improve prospective markets and to secure a viable future for hides and leather industries. We had previously investigated the production of nonwoven, green composites, and films from collagen fiber networks, which were extracted from un-tanned hides and from tannery solid wastes, such as splits or trimmings. Recently, we investigated the preparation of biobased sponges from un-tanned, specifically limed hides, which have potential commercial applications in medical care. We also investigated the effects of processing steps such as bating and alkaline treatments using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on the morphology and viscoelasticity of resultant sponges from un-tanned hides. Results showed that the treatments of fiber networks have significant effects on the properties of resultant sponges. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed alkaline treatments yielded stiffer sponges than limed and bated samples. SDS-PAGE analysis showed the molecular weights of sponges were maintained in the range as those of commercial collagen samples. Lastly the resultant sponges are in the desirable apparent density range for a potential application as a medical sponge.
