PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Low density, easy of availability, less abrasive and biodegradable nature of lignocellulosic materials emphasized their usage for development of thermoplastic composites based on Rice Husk and Polypropylene (RHPP). Mechanical properties of RHPP composites such as tensile, impact strength decreases by the addition of rice husk, preheating of rice husk and its proper size is essential for its effective use as filler in polypropylene composites. Improvement in tensile, impact, hardness and abrasion resistance is possible by adding compatibiliser and reduction of cooling time. Impact strength of the composite increase with temperature, optimum temperature for obtaining good tensile, hardness and abrasion is 200°C. RHPP Composites thus prepared have potential for applications in building and automobile industries.
(Wikipedia)

PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Controlling fiber orientation and fiber distribution in plastic injection of glass reinforced polymers is important due to the improvement of the properties of the material. Variation in shear layer thickness of fiber distribution affects the properties of the injection moldings. In this study, 30 % glass fiber reinforced polypropylene was injected under various injection molding conditions in order to increase the shear layer thickness in which fiber orientation was parallel to the flow direction. The experimental study was carried out according to the Taguchi L9 orthogonal array. The mold temperature, nozzle temperature and injection rate were chosen as input parameters and the thickness of the shear layer was taken as output. Analysis of variance was also applied to observe the effectiveness of the process parameters on shear layer thickness. The shear layer thickness was measured over the images obtained by scanning electron microscopy. In order to investigate the dynamic mechanical behavior of the material depending on fiber distribution, dynamical mechanical analysis was applied. Storage modulus, loss modulus and tan delta values were obtained. It has been observed that higher mold temperature and nozzle temperature values increased shear layer thickness in injection molding of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene. It has been seen that 65 % of increment in shear layer thickness induced approximately 50 % of increment in storage modulus and loss modulus. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Cast films of two linear polypropylenes (PP) having different molecular weights and their blends with 5, 20, and 40 wt.% random and block copolymers were prepared. The produced cast films were uniaxially and biaxially hot drawn at T = 155ºC using a biaxial stretcher and the changes in structure and morphology were examined and related to barrier, mechanical, haze, and tear properties. The crystallinity and crystal size distribution of the films were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The uniaxial drawing generated a highly oriented fibrillar structure, resulting in an increase in the melting point of the films. A significant effect of the random copolymer on the size of crystallites was found using DSC, which was also confirmed from polarized optical microscopy (POM). Compared to the neat homopolymers, finer and numerous spherulites were observed for the blends. During drawing, the applied loads in the machine and transverse directions (MD and TD, respectively) were recorded and related to breaking up and tilting of the crystal lamellae. Adding the random copolymer appreciably decreased the haze of the films and hence drastically improved the clarity. Tensile properties and tear resistance of the cast films in MD and TD were evaluated. The addition of the random copolymer slightly reduced the Young modulus and tensile strength, but increased the elongation at break. A slight increase in the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the biaxially drawn films were observed by adding the copolymer. Procédés de fabricationIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A series of polypropylene hollow fiber membranes was fabricated by melt-spinning and stretching. The crystalline behavior and hard elasticity of precursor hollow fibers were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), elastic recovery and strain-stress curves. The structure and properties of membranes were investigated in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, pure water flux, and so on. The results showed that membranes with excellent structure and properties can be obtained at a spin-draw rate of 350 m/min and a stretching ratio of 200 %. The evolution of crystal structure was explored during the annealing and stretching processes by two-dimensional small-angle X-ray scattering (2D-SAXS). Shish-kebab structure was obtained during annealing for hollow fibers at a spin-draw rate of 350 m/min. The crystalline lamellae were destroyed and micropores were formed during the fabrication of membranes by stretching. A wholly aromatic LCP having a low melting point, namely a AL-7000 copolyester was used, because it also uses a compatibilizer with a low decomposition temperature. As the amount of 2,2′-Bis(2-oxazoline) increased, the dispersibility of the LCP improved and the tensile properties were improved, but when it was added in excess, a loss in function was observed. In particular, when 0.5 wt% of 2,2′-Bis(2-oxazoline) were added, the tensile strength and elastic modulus were the highest, and cohesive fracture (fracture within the matrix, not at the PP/LCP interface) was observed in the scanning electron microscope image.
