However, when their owner or the library subscriber wishes to read them they expect the bindings to be in perfectly sound condition. Unlike the majority of products made from leather, bookbindings are expected to last almost indefinitely. That is why when, in the middle of the nineteenth century, it was discovered that large numbers of new bindings were deteriorating rapidly, an explanation was sought. That is also why, over the next century and a half, investigations were made into methods for producing bookbinding leathers with increased resistance to the various agents of deterioration. Care had to be taken, however, to ensure that the materials produced retained the physical characteristics which had made leather the premier choice of bookbinders for hundreds of years. These include ease of paring, easeof moulding, lack of springiness and ability to be tooled. We have studied the principle and method of testing leather fullness and softness by compression and Lastometer type experiments. A variety of Lastometer apparatus for testing softness had been designed and manufactured. Some parameters, such as compression/decompression and fullness work, have been calculated using the experimental data. The results are coincident with those of HEM (hand evaluation method). This testing procedure appears to be reliable for measuring leather fullness and softness. Note de contenu : - PRINCIPLE

LastomètreIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Research has been carried out to evaluate the use of acoustic emission studies on leather. Unlike other research this technique reported here describes the measurement of sound in the audible range. Using the technique it has been possible to construct a system to detect the grain crack that occurs during the lastometer test. This technology has been patented. Note de contenu : - 1) Apparatus
