Tannage Résumé : Collagen extracted from leather wastes was used as the main raw material, a modified protein retanning agent was prepared by free radical polymerization reaction with butyl acrylate and styrene. The product was characterized by FT-IR, TEM, particle size analysis and other methods. The retanning properties were studied on goat garment leather. The results showed that grafting took place between collagen and the non-ionic monomers. The grafting rate was about 65%. The latex particles of the modified collagen cross-linking emulsion were spherical and uniform, the average particle size was about 117nm. The resistances of the product to electrolyte, acid and alkali were good. The thickening rate [substance increase] of the leather was about 10% when using the retanning agent. The leather has good resistance to wet and dry rubbing after retanning, the fixing effect was remarkable. The shrinkage temperature was up to 122°C. Compared with similar commercial retanning agents, the tensile strength and tearing strength of leather retanned by the self-prepared retanning agent increased by 28.5% and 37.8%, respectively. However, the generally presence of formaldehyde greatly restricts the widespread application of amino resins. In this study, furfural, an organic compound derived from biomass material, was used to substitute for formaldehyde in the synthesis of melamine resin based on an alkaline-acid procedure. The as-synthesized formaldehyde-free melamine resin (MRf) showed excellent performances in leather processing. FTIR and 13C-NMR were used to characterize the chemical structure of MRf. The particle size as well as zeta potential were also determined. The retanning performances of MRf indicated that the overall performances of MRf are comparable to conventional formaldehyde contained melamine resin (MR) and commercial melamine resin (CMR). In particular, the thickness of the leather retanned by MRf was enhanced around 10.33%, which is significantly higher than that of controls MR (6.16%) and CMR (5.94%). Color measurements showed that MRf imparted leather with higher dark intensity. This present work demonstrated that furfural could be a potential candidate to replace formaldehyde in the production of formaldehyde-free melamine resin. Furfural

Tannage Résumé : Sulfonated amino resins are an important class of polymers which are used as retanning agents in the leather industry. There is challenge for such resins to be synthesised without formaldehyde to satisfy the strict regulation in leather goods. In this work, formaldehyde-free melamine based retanning agents have been synthesised by acid catalysed process using furfural as condensing agent and sodium metabisulfite as the sulfonating agent. Sulfonated melamine furfural (SMFr) resins were synthesised using different molar ratio of melamine, sodium metabisulfite and furfural. Stable and water-soluble resins were produced without etherification.
The sodium metabisulfite to melamine ratio (SMB/M) was changed from 0.5-2.0 and furfural to melamine mole ratio (Fr/M) was varied from 2-6. The viscosity behaviour of the produced resins wâs evaluated with the increasing trend of sulfonation and increasing mole ratio of furfural to melamine. Functional group analysis and conversion of reactants into product was elucidated by FTIR.
Synthesised formaldehyde-free resins (SMFr) were comparatively evaluated as retanning agents on goatskin wet-blue against a commercially available sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF) resin. The retanning performance of synthesised resins was studied and found better than that of the commercial SMF resin.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials and equipment - Preparation of SMFr resin

Travail de rivière (cuir)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : One of the major areas of Leather research is the development of tanning processes using less or no chrome which is a problem ingredient in tannery effluents. Full chrome suede garment leathers are pro-duced by making use of chrome tanning agent for pretanning followed by vegetable tannin extracts and/or syntans as retanning agents. A process is developed using basic titanium sulphate* in the place of chrome along with syntans and/or vegetable tannins for retan¬ning, for the manufacture of goat suedes. The resultant leathers are found to possess sufficient nap and fullness. An added advantage with these titanium-tanned leathers is that pastel shades can be obtained. The basic titanium sulphate is employed as a pickling-cum-tanning agent making use of its inherent acidity. Note de contenu : - Raw material
