Spectrométrie de masseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs) arise from the chemicals used in the various stages of the leather manufacturing process. An important aim of the tanning industry is to minimize or eliminate VOCs and SVOCs, without lowering the quality of leather.
This paper shows the development of a new headspace-solid phase micro extraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) method for the identification of VOCs and SVOCs emitted by newly designed polymers for the leather finishing operation. These new polymers are polyurethane resins designed to reduce the VOC and SVOC concentration. This method enables a simple and fast determination of the qualitative and semi-quantitative content of VOCs and SVOCs in polyurethane-type finishing resins. The chemicals that are of concern in this paper are the following: Dipropylene glycol Monomethyl Ether (DPGME), DBE-3 (a mixture of dibasic esters) and Triethylamine (TEA). The test conditions that have been determined to carry out the HS-SPME assay are the following: incubation time (2 hours), extraction temperature and time (40°C; 5 minutes) and the desorption conditions (280°C, 50 seconds).
Ten samples of laboratory scale resins were tested by HS-SPME followed by gas chromatography (GC-MS). DPGME and DBE-3 (a mixture of dimethyl adipate, dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate) have been identified effectively. The compounds are identified by a quantitative method using external calibration curves for the target compounds. The technique is not effective to determine the TEA compound, since the chromatograms shown poor resolution peaks for the standard.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Chemicals and reagents - Chromatography - HS-SPME method

RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper represents the use of the natural resin either by themselves or as a constitutes of the coating materials for decorative & protective purposes. Natural resins are insoluble in water, more or less soluble in the organic substances and vegetable oils. The turmeric extract modified with the oleic acid is used in the preparation of the paint. These paint systems have very good adhesion, flexibility, and good color retentions. Oleic acid modified turmeric extract shows improvements in overall properties like drying time, scratch hardness, adhesion, water, sea water, and acid alkali resistance. The (turmeric resin modified with oleic acid) paint system also shows overall better properties like drying time, flexibility, scratch hardness, adhesion, water, sea water & acid alkali resistance. solvantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Solvents in water-based coatings may be determined by sampling the coating head space using solid phase microextraction and gas chromatographing the extract. Several water-based coatings of known composition were analyzed by direct capillary gas chromatography and excellent agreement with theoretical VOC values was obtained. Fifty-two water-based architectural and industrial maintenance coatings were analyzed by a combination of SPME/GC and direct GC of solutions in methanol or dimethyl-formamide and the results compared with reported values. The SPME/GC method appears to be especially suitable for the analysis of low VOC content water-based coatings, for which EPA Method 24 often gives poor results. The identification and quantitation ofexempt solvents may be performed easily with this method. Residual solvent in dried paint films may be determined by SPME/GC. Séparation (technologie)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Variability in the lipid content from one area of a hide to another has prevented accurate comparisons of the chemical compositions of hides. Since the various lipid constituents are the result of different biological processes and serve different purposes within the hide, the contents of certain lipids vary more than others within the hide. In these studies the lipid components were determined in each of five stratigraphic layers taken from 11 areas which represented about two-thirds of the area of the right side of a steerhide. There was considerable variability in the content for each lipid class, both areawise and stratigraphically.
The lipids on the coarse-clipped and fine-clipped hair were determined for nine areas, and these also showed considerable variability.Note de contenu : - Preparation of material
