A feedforward neural network with sigmoidal activation functions was used with a conjugate gradient algorithm to recognize the complex input-output relation between the paint properties and the formula components. We restricted the study to only two properties of alkyd enamel paints: gloss and drying time. A database of five different families of alkyd enamel paints, containing the different components of the formulations as well as process information, was used in this study. The results obtained show, within the expected uncertainty tolerance, that predictive power of more than 90% for these two properties can be achieved. A sensitivity analysis was also performed using ANNs, yielding the relative importance of the different components of the formulation on the properties of the enamel coatings, which agrees with experience for gloss but gives mixed results for the drying time (apparently due to the high uncertainties in the measurement of this property).

Revêtement émail:Peinture-émailIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Enamel paint will naturally air dry and the drying time will vary in accordance with the type of enamel paint being used, the drying conditions and environmental conditions. Oil based enamels fully dry in 8 — 24 hours and dry on the inside first and then outwards. It is easy to tell when an oil based enamel has fully cured, as it will feel entirely dry when touched, the term enamel paint is also something of a misconception, as the majority of enamel paints on the market are considerably softer than vitreous enamel and even stoved synthetic resins.
The binder is the key component of the paint, which includes natural and synthetic resins, vegetable oils and natural fats, etc. These are the film former materials in paints. The main function of the binders is to hold the different components together and to adhere the film with the applied surface. The basic properties of paints such as drying, gloss, hardness, durability, flexibility, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, chemical resistance, adhesion, etc. are solely governed by the binder system used in paint formulations.Note de contenu : - Classification of stoving paints

The polymers made with these techniques are not only defined by their composition, molecular weight, and polydispersity index, but also by there synthesis method—demonstrated with two AB copolymer dispersants prepared by GTP and ATRP.
Using these polymerization techniques, novel polymeric additives for coatings and inks are being developed. Wetting and dispersing additives based on gradient copolymers and leveling additives based on polyacrylate extended polysiloxane block copolymers are two examples of new additive molecules based on controlled polymerization techniques.Note de contenu : - Controlled polymerization technologies

VieillissementIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of polyesters were formulated into melamine baking enamels and evaluated by QUV-B, QUV-A, Xenon arc, Emmaqua® NTW, and Florida exposures in order to determine the effect of polyester composition on outdoor durability. Specifically, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol was compared to propylene glycol and neopentyl glycol in several compositions that utilized adipic acid, isophthalic acid, and phthalic anhydride as the diacid constituents. Unexpected positive results for polyesters based upon 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol led to a detailed analysis of polyester decomposition mechanisms and raised questions concerning the true significance of beta-hydrogen degradation pathways. Semiempirical frontier molecular orbital calculations demonstrated that the beta-hydrogen of diols and diol esters are less susceptible to oxidative attack than the alpha hydrogens. The molecular orbital calculations fit well with experimental evidence and provided a deeper understanding of the effect that the components of polyesters have upon the exterior durability of the coating.
