Multi-functional material demands — such as ice-phobic, radar-absorbing or static-dissipation, wide operating temperatures, as well as fuel resistance — are increasingly common in this industry. An advancement of silicone technology significant to the aircraft industry is the development of fast-cure, room-temperature-vulcanized (RTV) silicone adhesives with fuel-resistant properties. These materials are extremely versatile and can be designed and formulated to permanently or temporarily bond surfaces together while maintaining excellent elastomeric qualities. Initially, traditional polyurethane hot melt adhesives addressed several of these issues; however the technology was somewhat limited. Reichhold has significantly improved the technology with its patented Ever-Lock[R] line of "fully reactive" polyurethane hot melts.
Reichhold's "fully reactive" polyurethane hot melts are designed to successfully combine high performance thermoset bonding and highly efficient production capabilities for the end-user. In addition, this technology allows customers to bond a variety of substrates including plastics, pressed wood products, lauans, metals, stainless steel and vinyls.
Figure 1 shows the chemical reactions of typical reactive polyurethane hot melts (PURHM). At the manufacturing site, polyols - materials that contain hydroxyl end groups - are combined with an excess of isocyanate-containing product. This combination produces polyurethane polymers with terminal isocyanate groups. These starting blocks determine the physical properties of the polymer.
Initially, polyurethane hot melt adhesives function similarly to conventional thermoplastic hot melts and eliminate the need for extended compression or fixturing of the assemblies. Subsequently, the terminal isocyanate groups react with moisture in the substrates and surrounding air to form a thermoset adhesive bond. During the crosslinking process, the product evolves from a thermoplastic to thermoset adhesive, differentiating these products from conventional thermoplastic alternatives.Note de contenu : - Critical performance characteristics

This article will outline the history, chemistry manufacturing process, surface preparation, application, characteristics for FBE. FBE was first introduced during 1960s. During time though the technology was no so advanced and mainly FBE was being applied by manual spray application or by fluid bed process. Gas Fired Oven Heating or Induction heating was the method of heating. With time, as technology advances, major changes has been seen in terms of improvement of designing the formulation of FBE, manufacturing process, application method and laying.
