ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Rubber compounds have high viscoelastic property. One of the viscoelastic behaviors shown in profile extrusion is an extrudate swell and circulation flow at the corner of inside of die. Application of viscoelastic model to a capillary extrusion has been investigated in this study. Experiments and simulations have been performed using Fluidity Tester and commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, Polyflow respectively. Die swell of rubber compounds in a capillary die were predicted using a non-linear differential viscoelastic model, Phan-Thien and Tanner (PTT) model for various relaxation times and relaxation modes. As relaxation time and number of relaxation mode increase, die swell increases. The results of simulations were compared with the experiment. Pressure and velocity distributions, and circulation flows at the corner of reservoir have been analyzed through computer simulation. Two and three relaxation modes with large range of relaxation time examined in this study showed good agreement with experimental results of die swell and well represented circulation flow at the corner of reservoir in the capillary die. Note de contenu : - LA COMPOSITION DES MÉLANGES

ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Technical rubber or polymer profiles are often extruded while dragging them into a water bath. However, complex or heavy profiles may require additional guiding tools. For example, geometrically complex profiles, such as PVC-window frames, require the use of calibrators for satisfying severe geometric requirements, while heavy rubber profiles, such as D-shape fenders or tire treads, require a conveying belt mainly for being able to achieve the process. Within the context of numerical simulation of extrusion flows, such a guiding tool brings an additional downstream constraint to the kinematic equation which dictates the shape of the extrudate surface. In the present paper, we propose a simple engineering approach for modelling a conveyor belt used in rubber tire tread extrusion, and we apply it to the simulation of the extrusion flow for a 3D non-symmetric profile of a viscoelastic material. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A continuous extrusion devulcanization process has been developed by using supercritical CO2. Experiments have been carried out on an industrial scale twin screw extruder to study the effects of processing conditions on the properties of devulcanized rubber. Using a fractional factorial design in three levels, the effects of process temperature, screw speed, and feed rate on the sol fraction, degree of devulcanization, Mooney viscosity, and tensile properties of devulcanized rubber have been investigated. The significance of the effects of the processing conditions decreases in the following order: flow rate, screw speed, and process temperature. Similar trends are noted for different responses with the exception of tensile properties. The observed relationship between the sol fraction and the degree of crosslinking in the rubber samples before and after devulcanization points to a highly selective disruption of the sulfur crosslinks in the rubber network during devulcanization rather than a random network scission. Mooney viscosity has been found to be in excellent agreement with the network structure properties, sol fraction, and degree of devulcanization.

ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The extrusion process of silica rubber through a chemical reaction is unstable, and the flow mechanism in the extruder is still unclear. In this study, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) has been chosen as the matrix and the reinforcing effects of two different kinds of fillers, silica and titanium dioxide, have been investigated on SBR. Additionally, the effect of the properties of the SBR/filler composites on extrudate swelling has been examined. The reinforcing effect of the filler was confirmed by dynamic viscoelasticity, and the swell ratio was measured using a capillary rheometer. The results suggest that titanium dioxide has no reinforcing effect, as there is no interaction between titanium dioxide and the molecular structure of SBR. In contrast, there was a significant interaction between silica and SBR. It was found that the bound rubber, which is an SBR gel with restricted molecular chains, causes a reduction in the swell ratio, and this reduction effect is larger than that caused by filling the filler in the matrix. Furthermore, it was observed that this bound rubber deforms during flow and affects the extrudate swell phenomenon.
