Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The control of pH of a process plays an important role in many chemical or biological reactions. The monitoring and control of pH of processes like wastewater treatment, manufacturing food and leather making facilitate to reduce pollution and improve the quality of the final product. The focus of this study is to optimize the usage of lime and recycling of spent liquor through continuous monitoring system of pH to achieve near zero residue from liming operation. But the challenges are nonlinear behaviour of the system and frequent fouling of pH sensors. The system developed monitors the pH values and controls the cycling time and the addition of lime as per the user set profile. The real time data of pH values in the process is logged on to the PC for further analysis. The efficacy of the system developed was validated at lab level and can be easily scaled up for implementation in industries. The results showed that the effluent from leather making can be minimized by adopting automated pH monitoring and control systems. Note de contenu : - Materials and methods

QuebrachoLe quebracho est un arbre à écorce ligneuse, mesurant 30 mètres de haut, à feuilles tannées et à fleurs tubulées blanches.
Quebracho est l'un des noms communs, en espagnol, d'au moins trois espèces similaires d'arbres originaires du Gran Chaco, en Amérique latine : Schinopsis lorentzii (quebracho colorado santiagueño), de la famille des Anacardiaceae ; Schinopsis balansae (quebracho colorado chaqueño), de la même famille ;

Vêtements en cuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Dyes based on synthetic formulations are widely used in the leather industry, however, many aryl amine dyes are restricted due to their carcinogenic nature. Environmental concern leads one to look for the dye products based on natural resources, which may have advantages of biodegradability and lower toxicity. We aimed to create an eco-friendly dyeing process by forming in-situ complexes between vegetable tannins and the Cr-Fe tanning salt, where the use of iron salts results in various colours on reaction with various vegetable tannins. Sheepskins were tanned using the Cr-Fe tanning salt and treated with various vegetable tanning materials, brown, black and grey shades were developed. The shades obtained have been quantified by reflectance measurements and compared by visual assessment.
Strength characteristics of the leathers treated with 5% vegetable tannins are higher than those treated with 1% tannins, bulk properties not being affected with the increase in concentration from 1 to 5%. The light, wet and dry rub fastness of the naturally coloured leathers are good with no change on ageing. Colour reproduction at bulk level production is acceptable with minor batch variations.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS : Process details for larger scale trials - Physical testing

Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The development of commercially successful salt-free chrome tanning technology is the need of global leather sector to reduce the total dissolved solids in wastewater. Though some attempts have been made to develop salt-free chrome tanning technology, drawbacks such as slow diffusion of chromium, unevenness in softness and other organoleptic properties are the major concern. The generation of localized acid swelling might be a reason for the above drawbacks and no scientific literature available for the same. Hence, it is important to analyze the effect of acid swelling and its impact on the diffusion of chromium, ageing characteristics of wet-blue leather and physical properties of crust leather. The results show that the acid swelling delays the diffusion of chromium in tanning process and also enhances the growth marks on wet-blue leather. The ageing study reveals that the wet-blue obtained from acid swollen system dehydrates faster than the conventional salt based chromium tanning system. In addition, the wet-blue leather from acid swollen system is prone to fungal attack. The industrial glove leather obtained from acid swollen system has reduced strength characteristics viz., 15% reduction in tensile strength, 17% reduction in tear strength and 20% reduction in grain crack/bursting strength. Further, the degree of heterogeneity in softness is high for crust leather obtained from acid swollen system and also more looseness with internal emptiness. Color value measurements reveal that the crust leather obtained from the conventional tanning system is lighter in shade than the acid-swollen system. The results will be useful to design commercially viable salt-free or low-salt tanning systems as well as to tackle the inadvertent industrial scenario where the tanners are looking for solutions for accidental acid swelling and subsequent salvage of the leathers for possible recovery and applications.

Tannage Résumé : A chromium-free amphoteric polymer retanning agent was prepared by free radical polymerization reaction of undecylenic aldehyde (UAL), acrylic acid (AA) and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) as raw materials. The structure of amphoteric polymer retanning agent was characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR. Amphoteric polymer retanning agent was applied to the retanning of vegetable-tanned light leather to investigate the binding ability of crust leather to anionic dyes, fat liquoring agent and physical-mechanical properties of the crust leather. The results showed that the synthesized amphoteric polymer retanning agent was successfully prepared. The application trial indicated that the amphoteric polymer retanning agent can improve the binding capacity between leather and anion dye and fat liquoring agent in the retanning process. The dye absorption rate of the crust leather was up to 99.58% and the dyeing liquor was clear. Furthermore, color of the crust leather was uniform and full and its K/S value and drywet rub fastness, thickening rate and physical-mechanical properties were higher than that of the retanned leather by acrylic resin retanning agent. In addition, the crust leather after retanning with amphoteric polymer retanning agent has good softness, and the absorption rate of fat liquoring agent was 99.62%. The above results showed that amphoteric polymer retanning agent possessed the good retanning property in vegetable tanned sheep garment leather. Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The efficient removal of calcium from delimed hide is essential to leather quality, but few reports have elaborated on how residual calcium in delimed hide affects leather quality. In this study, four delimed hides containing different calcium content were first prepared by using ammonium sulfate and sodium gluconate. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry results showed that the atomic percentages of calcium on the grain surfaces of the four delimed hides were 8.17%, 4.82%, 2.34%, and 0.25%, respectively. The bating, chrome tanning, and post-tanning performances of the four delimed hides were then analyzed to evaluate the effect of calcium in delimed hide on leather quality. Results showed that the removal efficiency of non-collagenous protein from hide in enzymatic bating, the evenness of chromium distribution, the shrinkage temperature of wet blue, and the physical properties of crust leather all increased as the calcium content of delimed hide decreased. Furthermore, efficient calcium removal from the grain surface of delimed hide played a key role in the color brightness and uniformity of wet blue and crust leather. The results draw our attention to the importance of considering the effectual removal of calcium from delimed hide for obtaining high-quality leather.
