The appropriate self-repairing coatings are designed to be used for heavy-duty corrosion protection or for the protection of moisture-sensitive substrates like wood. Microcapsules based on thermoset resins (urea–formaldehyde and melamine–formaldehyde) which contained components of different chemical natures (resins or inhibitors) were fabricated using emulsion techniques. The subsequent characterization included optical, fluorescence, and electron microscopy as well as adapted microindentation techniques to determine capsule break forces. Different model coatings were formulated making use of varying amounts of healing agent-charged microcapsules. The coated samples were then injured under controlled conditions (by Erichsen cupping in the case of steel, by simulated hail in the case of wood) and then subjected to salt spray testing (natural and accelerated), weathering, or even real-life exposure, always in comparison with a blank. The results obtained demonstrate the superiority of microcapsule-based self-healing coatings compared to classical protection formulations, and appropriate coating systems have in the meantime been successfully brought to the market.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work, a self-healing powder coating based on micro-encapsulated linseed oil is reported. Linseed oil was chosen as the self-healing agent for its excellent film forming capability and Poly (melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) was chosen as a shell material. Microcapsules were synthesised by in-situ polymerisation. A powder coating based on thermoplastic powder was used. Microcapsules were mixed with the powder coating and sprayed electrostatically on the cold rolled steel. The thermal stability of microcapsules was evaluated with TGA. The corrosion evaluation of the coating was done with the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (FIS) and salt water immersion tests. The experimental results have demonstrated a strong inhibition of corrosion in the micro-encapsulated system. Furthermore, impedance measurements has shown an increase of impedance modulus of the micro-encapsulated system during immersion in the corrosive medium, which is reiated to the suppression of active corrosion activities and healing of the scratched areas. Healing of the coating was also demonstrated by optical microscopy. This study successfully demonstrated the self-healing activity of micro-encapsulated linseed oil in protecting steel surfaces against corrosion in powder coatings. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of novel aluminum phosphate ester (APEA) flame retardants were synthesized by the salification of cyclic phosphate ester acid (PEA) with different mass ratios of aluminum hydroxide (ATH) and thoroughly characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The PEA and APEAs were thoroughly mixed with melamine formaldehyde resin to produce five kinds of transparent fire-retardant coatings. The synergistic effects of ATH on the thermal stability, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression properties of the coatings were investigated by different analytical instruments. The results show that the incorporation of ATH greatly decreases the weight loss, char index, flame spread rating, heat release rate, total heat release, smoke production rate, total smoke release and specific optical density in the coatings applied to plywood boards, which is ascribed to a more compact and intumescent char formed during burning, as determined from digital photographs and scanning electron microscopy images. The synergistic effects of ATH in the coatings depend on the content of ATH, and an excessive amount of ATH diminishes the synergistic effects on the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties based on fire protection tests and cone calorimeter test. Thermo-gravimetric analysis reveals that the thermal stability and char-forming ability of the coatings gradually improve with increasing loading of ATH. FTIR analysis demonstrates that the incorporation of ATH forms a more phosphorus-rich crosslinked char and aromatic char during burning, thus effectively reducing the mass loss, heat release, and smoke production and exhibiting excellent synergistic flame retardant and smoke suppression effects in the coatings. SyntansIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Synthetic tanning agents are indispensable for making any type of leather article. There is a challenge for syntans to be processed without formaldehyde to meet strict regulations in the leather goods and chemicals arena. ln the present study, formaldehyde-free melamine based retanning has been developed using glyoxal as a condensing agent and sodium sulfamate as a sulfonating agent. Sulfonated glyoxylated melamine-based resins were prepared using different mole ratios of melamine, sodium sulfamate and glyoxal.
The sodium sulfamate to melamine mole ratio (SS/M) was varied from 0.5 to 3.0 and glyoxal to melamine mole ratio (GIM) was varied from 2 to 6. Fluidity and gelling behaviour of resinous solutions were evaluated with the increasing trend of sulfonation and with increasing mole ratio of glyoxal to melamine.
Stabilized resins were applied comparatively as retanning agents on chrome-tanned goatskins against a conventional formaldehyde based melamine resin. Comparative tear strengths, tensile strengths, elongation at break and scanning electron micrographs of glyoxylated melamine and formaldehyde-based melamine-retanned leathers were studied and better performance was found in glyoxylated melamine-tanned leathers. The resin with optimum performance was structurally elucidated by FTIR.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Chemicals and apparatus - Preparation of sulfonated melamine glyoxylated resin

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : One of the cost-effective ways to significantly influence the coating formation process and the performance of polyester coatings is to use a cross-linking agent containing an isocyanate. Methylated melamine-formaldehyde with a high degree of alkylation (HMMM) and methyl ethyl ketoxime-blocked hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) were used for polyester resin cross-linking. The influence of cross-lin king agents on coating performance and characteristics was studied using Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear Rheomenty (SAOS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) techniques. The cross-linking degree of the polyester system containing the mixture of HMMM and HDI was shown to be significantly lower than that of the systems where only one of the cross-linking agents was used. High loss modulus values G" in the system with HMMM as compared to the system with HDI can be explained by a less dense three-dimensional network structure. With the decrease of HMMM and HDI the formation of three-dimensional network starts at a higher temperature. At the same time, when only the hardener content is reduced it leads to the decrease of the cross-linking degree. Note de contenu : - Table 1 : System ingredients
