Tannage Résumé : In this paper, montmorillonite (MMT) was first modified with dimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride (referred to as DMDAAC) and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) through a cation exchanging reaction. The modified MMT and the vinyl polymer were then used to prepare composites which were then characterized by XRD. Finally, the vinyl polymer/CTAB modified MMT (abbreviated to VP/C-MMT) was applied in the leather making process to examine its tanning properties.
The results of XRD show that the interlayer spacing of the modified MMT is received are 1.40nm and 1.99nm for DMDAAC-MMT and CTAB-MMT respectively, while the d-spacing distance of pristine MMT is only 1.23nm. The composites of DMDAAC modified MMT and VP are phase separated, while CTAB modified MMT formed intercalated nanocomposites with VP.
The application results show, that the shrinkage temperature of leather tanned by VP/C-MMT nano-tannage associated with 2% chrome under optimum process conditions can be raised to 90°C, the strength properties and the water permeability of tanned leather are closely similar to those of a 8% chrome tanned leather, meanwhile, the incrassation rates [thickness increment ratios] are far geater than for the 8% chrome tanned leather. We conclude that the nano tannage is an appropriate application in a reduced-chrome tannage.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Major chemicals - Synthesis of vinyl polymer - Preparation of modified MMT - Preparation of composites - Application of VP/C-MMT nano tannage - Characterization and measurement

Tannage synthétiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : With the enhancement of environmental protection consciousness, concerns have been raised about non-toxic and biodegradable leather retanning agents. According to the European standard 2002/231/EC, the free formaldehyde content of leather products should be less than 150 mg/kg. As one of the retanning agents in the market, the content of free formaldehyde in the Multifunctional retanning agent (MTA) is 372.22 mg/kg and higher than the limit value. In this work, glutaraldehyde as an alternative of formaldehyde was used to modify acrylic polymer and an amphoteric acrylic retanning agent was prepared. Then it was used in retanning process, and its retanning and assistant-dyeing properties were investigated. The results showed that the free formaldehyde content of amphoteric acrylic retanning agent modified with glutaraldehyde was only 4.17 mg/kg. Meanwhile, the presence of amino groups in the amphoteric acrylic retanning agent improved the dyeing properties of leather by electrostatic attraction. Compared with the leather treated with anionic acrylic retanning agent, the residual dye concentration of the dyeing effluent of the retanned leather with amphoteric acrylic retanning agent decreased from 17.4 mg/L to 10.0 mg/L, and the dyed leather had better resistances to friction and water-washing. In addition, the BOD5/COD value of the wastewater after Mannich base polymer retanning was only 0.32, indicating that the retanning agent was biodegradable. Moreover, the leather retanned with amphoteric acrylic retanning agent had good thermal stability, fullness and physical and mechanical properties.

Tannage Résumé : At present, some commercially available oil tanning agents have poor ability to combine with collagen, after they are used for tanning, massive amounts of oil tanning agent are left in the used tanning bath, which causes the problem of waste of oil tanning agent and environmental pollution. Developing an oil tanning agent which has the ability to combine with collagen, and simplifying the tanning process are the main aims of this dissertation. A new oil tanning agent with lanolin and octadecanol modified by cyanuric chloride is studied. Reaction material ratios were optimised based on the softness of the tanned leather and the eluted amount of oil tanning agent in the tanned leather. The synthesised oil tanning agent was analysed with infrared spectroscopy. The collagen fibre dispersion of the leather tanned with synthesised oil tanning agent was characterised with SEM. Experiments showed that the optimised material ratio was n(lanolin): n (octadecanol): n (cyanuric chloride) =1:1:1. The infrared spectroscopy proves that the experiment successfully added the triazine ring to the lanolin. SEM shows that the collagen fibres of the tanned leather are well dispersed which testifies that this oil tanning agent has the function of dispersing collagen fibres and is a good oil tanning agent.

Tannage Résumé : Chrome tanning is the main tanning leather method. However, the absorption of chromium is incomplete and residues are present in waste liquors thus polluting the environment. Moreover, Cr3+ will oxidise into carcinogenic Cr6+ under certain conditions. Here we a present a novel chrome-free tannage. The calix[4]arene was synthesized using tert-butyl phenol and formaldehyde as raw materials. The calix[4]arene was then sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid. The structure was characterised by FTIR and 1HNMR. The sulfonated calix[4]arene was applied in goatskin tanning. The results showed that the sulfonated calix[4]arene had a tanning effect. The physical and mechanical, properties of the tanned leather were better than those of conventional chrome-tanned leather. Note de contenu : - Materials
