Polyamide 12Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In the present study, Polyamide 12 was compounded with glass fibers in both laboratory and industrial twin screw extruders using various processing conditions (screw speed and feed rate). Dead-stop experiments were performed and samples were collected at different locations along the screws in order to determine the fiber length distribution and the extent of fiber breakage. Results show that significant fiber break-up occurs right after the addition of glass fibers to the molten matrix. Similarly fiber length distribution changes drastically at the first sampling location, near the glass fiber feeder. Processing conditions also influence the extent of degradation: it increases with screw speed and decreases with feed rate, which controls the residence time. Flow modelling has been used to calculate the flow conditions along the screw profile. It is shown that the modified Shon-Liu-White model previously proposed to describe the average fiber length evolution as function of specific energy is not able to correctly predict the evolution along the screw profile. In similar processing conditions, the large industrial extruder appears as less severe than the small laboratory one. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Fiber length measurements

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In France, bitumen has been used since four decades as a container material for low/intermediate activity and long lifetime radionuclides. Industrial Bituminized Waste Products (BWP) are produced by continuous extrusion of 60 wt.% bitumen and 40 wt.% salts, in which a very small fraction is radioactive. These incorporated salts are, in majority, of two types: soluble or insoluble. During storage, the organic matrix subjected to irradiation produces gases, which can give rise to BWP swelling in the container and then to a possible overflow. The extent of gas production is directly linked to the degree of dispersion of the salts into the bitumen matrix. To quantify this dispersion, the effect of extrusion operating conditions, such as feed rate and screw speed, have been studied using a laboratory scale co-rotating twin screw extruder. BWP rheological characterization shows the development of a pseudo-solid plateau at low frequency and a change in the linear viscoelastic domain when screw speed and feed rate are varied, indicating a modification of the dispersion state. Samples characterization with environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) confirms in the case of insoluble and soluble salts a change in the number of agglomerates, accompanied by an improvement of the dispersion at high screw speed but less remarkable with the feed rate. A Carreau-Yasuda law with a yield stress is proposed to describe the rheological behaviour of these materials. The effects of volume fraction and maximum volume fraction on viscosity are described using a Krieger-Dougherty equation.
UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This review paper is devoted to the preparation of clay-based thermoplastic nanocomposites by melt blending in a twin-screw extruder. The influence of the main processing parameters (screw speed, feed rate, barrel temperature, screw profile) on the state of the clay dispersion at the micro- and nanoscale is characterized. The change of dispersion state along the screws and the corresponding mechanisms are presented. The interest of process modelling to predict the state of dispersion is evaluated and, finally, the main modifications of the twin-screw extrusion process to improve the clay dispersion are reviewed. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This study looks at the influence of extrusion parameters such as screw speed, feed rate and barrel temperature on the nanocomposite structure (size of agglomerates, level of intercalation and exfoliation) and its consequences on final mechanical properties. Nanocomposites of polypropylene, maleated polypropylene and organomodified montmorillonite, with respective mass fractions of 85/10/5, were prepared in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder using a masterbatch dilution method. The nanocomposites structure was quantified by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and dynamic rheometry. Relationships between the microstructure at different levels (size and number of agglomerates, interlayer distance, melt yield stress to quantify the exfoliation level) and the processing conditions were established, revealing that specific mechanical energy received during extrusion was the key parameter controlling this microstructure. Mechanical properties in uniaxial tension (apparent Young’s modulus) were measured and related to the microstructural parameters resulting from extrusion conditions.
