These extruders have an improved melting and conveying capacity among other advantages, such as a lower melt temperature, less wear, less torque and less energy consumption. The aim of this paper is to present a mathematical model for predicting the melting rate in this type of extrusion system. Based on the classical melting mechanism observed in conventional extruders, it was possible to study the effect of the geometry of the grooved barrel on the melting rate of a polymer. It was shown that the grooves on the barrel notably increase the melting rate, when compared to conventional single screw extruders. A good agreement between theory and experimental data was found. Vis d'extrusion simpleIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Quality Assurance - A uniform temperature and a very good distribution of additives during the production of plastic melts are fundamental demands made on an extruder system. In present-day high-performance single-screw extruders, mixing elements with complex mixer geometries are necessary in order to be able to meet these demands. Titre : A new style single screw extruder with improved plastification and output power Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Eberhardt Grünschloß, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 291-300 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : A single-screw-extruder is presented, consisting of a barrel with grooved feed zone (helical grooves), a grooved melting zone (axial or helical grooves) and a barrier-screw with mixing and shearing elements. Compared with extruders with a smooth melting zone, significant process improvements are achieved regarding mass throughput, pressure build up, melt temperature, melt homogeneity, feed-zone cooling, processing wall-slipping polymers, abrasive wear, residence time, total degree of efficiency and economy. The processing principles of the new extruder are explained. Experimental results confirm the theoretical predictions. The system has proven to be very worthwile in more than 100 extrusion blow molding machines since 3 years.
