Within the EU, there is considerable focus on reducing the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). As a result of the Solvents Emission Directive, VOC emissions have been considerably reduced as of January 1, 2007 and a further reduction of allowable VOCs is dues as of 2010. These limiting values are applicable for decorative coatings that are not applied in installations where emission can be controlled.
The emission reductions needed by 2010 can only be achieved by the use of waterborne or high solids solventborne products. As most of the wall paints are already waterborne, special attention has to be given to trim paints, varnishes, primers and performance coatings.Note de contenu : - European VOC legislation

Polysiloxane and silicone are synonymous used expressions. Although silicone is the more commonly used term we'll mainly use the term polysiloxane, because it's clearer with respect to the chemistry and avoids misunderstanings with the metal silicone or polysiloxane chemistry.
'What is a polysiloxane ?' A polysiloxane is any one of a class of synthetic materials characterised by silicon and oxygen linked together in the siloxane bond, having organic groups attached to silicon, which have a distinct bearing on the properties.
Just as carbon atoms are the building blocks in conventional organic chemistry, so are silicon atoms the basic blocks to which we add organic side chains to build polysiloxane compounds having wide variety of usages and properties.
Three different methods are mainly used by the industry to produce the basic chlorosilane intermediates from which polysiloxanes are made. The three method are : Direct Method, Grignard Method and Olefin Addition Method. Because of limited space, here is just a short description of the most important one - the Direct Method.Note de contenu : - How to make polysiloxanes

Revêtements en phase aqueuse -- Additifs:Peinture en phase aqueuse -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Omya has developed products with a particle size designed to offer a range of opportunities for the application of calcium carbonate in the paint and coatings industry.
Natural calcium carbonates has become widely used as a mineral filler in the decorative paint industry. The reasons for this include its global availability and its excellent properties such as high brightness and low oil adsorption. However, just as important is the possiblity to develop products with a particle size designed to offert huge range of opportunities for the application of calcium carbonate in the paint and coatings industry.
The coarsest products based on this interesting material used in the coatings industry show a mean particle size of some milimetres, with the finest below one micron. Over decades the processing of calcium carbonates has consistently improved and today it is possible to develop products that were not achievable in the past, especially at the finer end of product range. But just having finer products available is not enough. The utilisation of these fine particles is the key to success. This requires also to have adequate overall properties which fulfil the requirements for modern coating raw materials, like easy dispersibility, cost efficiency.Note de contenu : - What is the benefit of having such products available ?

Revêtements poudreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : There is an emerging technology, which delivers conductivity plus high heat performance for the coating of plastics.
Powder coating is a fast-growing technology due mainly to its enviromental benefits, particularly the elimination of solvents and related compounds that are emitted into the air in conventional liquid paint. Powder coating has traditionally been used with metal substrates ; however, the need for greater design freedom has led to industry demand for technologies suitable for plastic substrates.
Lightweigh, high-performance and adaptable plastics offer many advantages over metals in applications ranging from mobile phones and TVs to automotive body panels and tractor hoods.
The challenge has been finding successful approaches to the key issues of powder coating these materials : conductivity to attract the coating and high heat performance to withstand the cure cycle. There have been three majors paths to this goal.Note de contenu : - Reaching the objectives
