[article]

The resin was then modified so that it could be used to synthesise alkyds and polyurethanes. Paints based on these binders were found to offer anticorrosive properties at least comparable to the rosinated alkyd formulation commercially used in India. Revêtements -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Intrinsic self-healing coatings have been drawing more and more attention over recent years. A self-healing coating that is able to maintain its original appearance and performance after damage is attractive for a huge scope of applications. This article reports the synthesis of a polyurethane-urea coating with 1-(2-aminoethyl)-imidazolidin-2-one (UDETA) units showing temperature- and moisture-triggered self-healing. Calorimetric and spectroscopic analyses give insight into the self-healing mechanism showing that the absorbed water is able to disturb inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds of the polymer chains and decrease the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Temperature-mediated self-healing can be performed from 80 up to 200°C. Aside from self-healing, the molecular dynamics in the polyurethane-urea polymer prove to be beneficial for damping applications as confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis. Thus, the polymer system features properties that are useful for two different applications, namely in coatings with self-healing and corrosion protective properties and in dampening materials. Corrosion resistance and flexibility/adhesion improve with the use of short oxide blocks and at the higher end of the oxide loading ranges studied, with propylene oxide being the preferred alkylene oxide. A two-stage procedure for copolymerization provides further enhancement of corrosion resistance. The structure-performance relationships found in this work are expected to apply to the use of similar resins in lower VOC waterborne, higher solids, and/or higher flow powder formulations. SilicatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper reviews the recent research and development of polymeric nanocomposite coatings based on layered silicates. In the past few decades, extensive research activities have been conducted on clay minerals due to their unique layered structure, rich intercalation chemistry and availability at low cost, environmental stability, and good processability. One of the most important categories of layered silicates is nanoclays. The nanoclay is considered as reinforcement for polymers in the manufacture of low-cost, lightweight and high performance nanocomposite coatings. In this paper, we try to introduce the structure, properties, and surface modification of clay minerals. Different properties of polymer clay nanocomposite coatings consisting of different polymers are also reviewed. These coatings may consist of conductive and nonconductive polymers. The corrosion resistance of each type is discussed separately. Some novel properties can be observed from the interaction of two dissimilar chemical components at the molecular level that posses enhancements in corrosion inhibition on metallic substrates. Finally, the prospective problems of industrial usage of these materials are mentioned.
