The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) assigns a grade of “D+” to the grid infrastructure and ranked its aging and condition the Number One challenge to reliability, both in likelihood of occurrence and potential severity. An unreliable electric grid will have significant negative impact both from an economic and security aspect. The direct cost to the grid from corrosion alone is some $700 million annually with indirect costs much higher. Note de contenu : - Contractor qualifications

Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : New modern technologies require new innovative materials. Corrosion control of metals is an important activity of technical, economical, environmental, and aesthetic importance. The use of oxides, such as chromates, is highly effective in corrosion protection. Scientists are looking at alternative materials to replace environmentally hazardous materials, e.g., chromates. One of the group of materials identified as corrosion inhibiting are conducting polymers (CPs). CPs have acquired more attentions in the last decades due to their environmentally benign nature and high effectiveness to protect steels against corrosion. The conducting polymer such as Polyaniline, Polypyrrole,Polythiophene, Polycarbazole, Polyindole etc. work as a strong oxidant to the steel, inducing the potential shift to the noble direction. The strongly oxidative conducting polymer facilitates the steel to be passivated. The review paper presented below attempts to summarize extensive studies of Polyaniline, Polypyrrole and Polythiophene polymer and their anticorrosive properties. Several researchers have reported diverse views about corrosion protection by CPs and hence various mechanisms have been suggested to explain their anticorrosion properties. These include anodic protection, controlled inhibitor release as well as barrier protection mechanisms. Different approaches have been developed for the use of CPs in protective coatings (dopants, composites, blends). Note de contenu : - PRINCIPLE OF CORROSION : Anodic reaction - Cathodic reaction

(Wikipedia)

Primaire (revêtement)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Magnesium-rich primers (MgRPs) are known to exhibit excellent corrosion resistance during natural weathering due to the formation of a controlled and complex cathodic protective layer which includes but is not limited to changing combinations of magnesium metal, magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium carbonate each during film formation, cure, and environmental exposure. Pretreating Mg powder with carbonic acid before incorporation into coatings has been shown to enhance the corrosion resistance of MgRPs. In an earlier study, the conditions for treating Mg powder and the effects of variables such as time and the order of addition were evaluated to determine optimized treatment conditions. In this study, the treatment process was analyzed further to better understand the nature of the carbonation process and the effect of treatment variables on the overall corrosion protection process. Coatings prepared with different ratios of treated and untreated Mg were evaluated via ASTM B117 salt fog exposure to determine the optimized ratio of treated and untreated pigments for maximum corrosion protection.

This resulted in the deposition of PPy on the surface of the Al flakes leading to the formation of doped PPy/Al flake composite pigments. These composite pigments were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, conductive-atomic force microscopy, four-point probe conductivity, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, these composites were incorporated in an epoxy-amide binder system in order to formulate a primer for an aluminum 2024-T3 substrate. The coatings were exposed to the Prohesion test conditions and corrosion resistance properties were monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, DC polarization, galvanic coupling, and scanning electrochemical microscopy measurements. It was found that the doped PPy/Al flake coatings provided sacrificial protection to the underlying aluminum 2024-T3 substrate. Additionally, the release of dopants from PPy backbone resulted in the passivation in the defect areas improving the corrosion protection ability.
