The development of more environmental friendly coating systems presents new challenges to the manufacturers of speciality chemicals and additives for coatings. New matting agents designed to meet the specific challenges provided by waterborne, high-solids and, to some extent UV curing systems have been commercialised in recent years. However, there is a continuiting demand for new, improved products and development programmes are ongoing. It is expected that calcium modified silica gel pigment technology will be turned to more and more as the preferred non-toxic method of corrosion control in all types of coatings, as the desire to couple high anti-corrosive performance with environmental awareness intensifies.Note de contenu : - Addition levels

Upon pyrolysis they form ceramics, but even curing at normal stoving or ambient temperatures can provide high performance coatings. Their use to protect against graffiti, corrosion and weathering is reviewed. It is cheap and versatile but rusts in air, water and the ground.
Expert estimate the total damage to the German economy caused by rust as approx. Euro 50 billion annually. Sustained corrosion protection using suitable materials and methods is thus of major importance. At the forefront are long-life, colorfast, resistant systems which are economical and eco-friendly.
The authors describe a binder technology based on silicone-epoxy hybrid resins (brand name : SILIKOPON EF) for particularly high-performance and eco-friendly anti-corrosive coatings. The advantage of this technology is that it permits isocyanate-free 2-pack formulations to be produced with VOC content <250g/L and even <100g/L thus complying with new and future VOC legislation and compatible with the increasing interest in isocyanate-free cross-linking.Note de contenu : - Causes and mechanisms of corrosion

Formulations aimed at metal protection were designed, without including anticorrosive additives, and deposited on 11SMnPb37 steel. Thin monolayer films were obtained by dip coating in different process conditions, avoiding primers. The developed procedure was simple and able to provide solid and well-anchored coatings. They were characterized in terms of morphology, scratch and wear endurance, and resistance to a corrosive environment. The optimum formulation and deposition parameters were found. The selected coating showed remarkable adhesion to the substrate, good mechanical properties, and resistance in a saline environment, proving to be suitable as a protective barrier against corrosion. The protective effect was ensured not by additives but through the excellent adhesion of the coating and its endurance to scratch and wear. Note de contenu : - Materials and manufacturing process
