This new tailored tara product will be able to facilitate the penetration of the tannin molecules through the leather section, avoiding or reducing the use of aldehydes, syntans, common vegetable tannins and other mineral salts. The aim of this part of the study is to manufacture final articles meeting the parameters set by different regulations, and assess if this modified tara can be marketed and used in the industry to replace some less sustainable products. This condensate reduces the driver's visibility, and the film also promotes dust adhesion, which further worsens the problem. Leather upholstery and fittings are important components for adding value in the automotive sector, and the fogging phenomenon can be reduced by careful attention in three areas. MesureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : BMW uses more than six million m² of leather a year - however, in producing acceptable leather components, the total leather wastage can be as high as 50%.
The causes of these rejections are largely due to:
- Poor raw material
- Transport damage
- Faults in leather manufacture
- Faults in subsequent leather use
- Losses during the cutting process
Other costs and losses can be attributed to:
- Additional sorting by the component producer
- Area losses induced by punching or stamping
- Rejection and reworking in production
- Complaints both internally and by customers
- Guarantee costs
- Additional administration and required working capacity
Many of these problems can be reduced, and the leather use optimised by measurements, such as:
- Determination of the physical properties of leathers upon delivery
- Measuring changes in leather properties during component production
- Targeted quality control to customer requirements
- Supervision of processes used in component production, such as lamination, concealment, forming coating and perforation

Wet-white (tannage)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has recently proposed a new regulation for the placing on the market of mixtures and articles containing bisphenols. If the draft is implemented without changes, this will - after various transition times - result in very low limits for these chemicals in leather auxiliaries and leather articles. When it comes to syntans, bisphenols are raw materials and unwanted side products, respectively. State-of-the-art production technologies for syntans might not succeed in lowering bisphenol content to the proposed limits, though. As syntans play an essentiel part in the production of almost all of today's leather articles, the new regulation will lead to a disruptive change in the selection of chemicals in common recipes. Zschimmer & Schwarz has anticipated this issue and presents the first solutions to achieve completely bisphenol-free leather. Note de contenu : - Importance of syntans

Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Acetaldehyde emissions are a significant challenge for automotive leather producing tanneries. This is especially true to meet the requirements for the Chinese market. Unlike formaldehyde, acetaldehyde is not used as a building block of tanning agents or auxiliaries and has rarely been traced in extraction assays in which the detection medium is water. However, it contributes to significant problems in emission tests for leathers in which the molecules are detected in the air. Until recently, few data points on acetaldehyde emissions were available, mostly on finished leather. In this publication, our new, facile method for the measurement of acetaldehyde emission will be introduced, evaluated, and exemplified with data across the whole process of leather making, from beam house to finished leather. With our new method we could show that the emissions generally decrease from skin to crust. Biochemical background for the high levels of acetaldehyde in skin will be given. Through the application of suitable scavengers, acetaldehyde emissions could be reduced significantly in automotive leathers.
