The demands on future mobility will remain unfulfilled without more widespread use of polymer materials. This was the unanimous view of almost 1,500 experts who met at the beginning of March at the “Rosengarten” in Mannheim, Germany, for the VDI Congress “Plastics in the Automobile”.

In the lightweight construction sector, the focus is on the development of high-strength materials at low mass. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) have proven to be particularly efficient. However, the production of primary carbon fibers is energy and cost-intensive - the use of recycled carbon fibers (rCF) processed into nonwovens for CFRP components is more cost-effective. Disadvantage: the strength properties are lower than CF-based CFRPs. The increase in partial strength properties could be achieved by means of targeted preferential alignment of the rCF in the nonwovens. In the project ProStAir, the airlay nonwovens formation process for CF and rCF was investigated. The central question was whether and how the orientation of the fibers of the nonwoven (isotropy ratio) can be influenced when manufacturing parameters change. Textiles et tissus à usages techniquesIndex. décimale : 677.4 Textiles artificiels Résumé : Tailored textiles (TT) are designed for use in high-performance materials with integrated local reinforcements. The latest developments in textile processing technology proved the potential of TT for a cost and weight-efficient design of fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP). TailCo, a researchproject recently started at RWTH Aachen University, aims at developing a modified product development process (PDP) for FRPs based on TT towards industrial applications.
