Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this paper we present experimental results on the hydrolysis of chrome tanned shavings.
It was observed that it is possible to remove chromium down to negligible values (less than 0.1 ppm) when hydrolysis is performed by heating the shavings at 80°C in calcium oxide liquors using the following weight proportions : 0.08 to 0.1 parts CaO, 1 part dried chrome shavings (equivalent to 2 parts wet shavings), 10 parts water. A protein concentrate containing about 80 % crude protein and 25 % essential amino acids was obtained.
An animal nutrition program to study the possible uses of this product was initiated. To obtain enough protein concentrate for this program a pilot plant has been designed and built.
Chicken feeding results have shown that the nutritional value of hydrolysed leather meal is nearly one half of the nutritional value of 44 % protein soybean oil meal and, when used in rations up to a level of 5 % has not caused any loss of appetite or visible metabolic problems to the animals.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/17Sp_Qp3QnmVeT_X_eeMrQWLmVsYqKft2/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8671

We conclude that above 40°C the reaction velocity is controlled by chemical reaction, the diffusion of OH- inside the shavings being a fast process. Temperatures below this limit are of no technical interest and were not investigated.
In the proposed model the conversion of splits into soluble proteins (fraction of hydrolysed shavings) is expressed as a 3rd degree polynomial, where the independent variable is time and the coefficients are functions of temperature.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/15XEvK0qRNqNA4IO2AD9j7XFl9rm-UbUx/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8674

Tannage Résumé : Water hyacinth (Echorinia crassipes) was grown under controlled conditions and subjected to different concentrations of tannery effluent in order to determine the levels of contaminants tolerated by the plant and the concomitant removal of BOD and chromium. Six sets of experiments were run and samples were collected every week for analysis. Each set of experiment was carried out for between 20-24 days. The proportions of tannery waste to sewage used in these experiments were 20:80, 40:60, 80:20 and 100:0. In all the experiments, a control was carried out using only domestic sewage.
It was found that the water hyacinth thrived during initial period at all levels, but began to show signs of decay after about 10 days in the three higher concentrations of tannery waste, i.e., 60:40, 80:20 and 100:0. The retarded growth and decay was observed in all the concentrations after a period of 4 weeks. The BOD removals in 16 days in all the five concentrations were 80 %, 68 %, 49 %, 35 % and 20 % respectively. Chromium was completely removed in the 20: 80 and 40:60 concentrations of tannery waste within 8 and 16 days respectively, for the other concentrations, the removals were in the range of 30-80 %.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JmGcB0rWoEB9oT4WAgSGjJXVUJtcrmIh/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8677

Titre : Chromium in tannery effluents and its impact on the environment Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : J. Gauglhofer, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : p. 103-106 Note générale : Papers from the 42nd South African Convention - Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Chromium is the most widely used tanning agent. For the tanner it is easy to use and produces high quality leather. By different retannages and other treatments it is possible to produce quite different leathers, starting from the same chrome tanned stock. Thus chrome tannage is very versatile and shortens the response time of the tanner to the demand for a new leather type. So, from the point of view of a tanner, chromium as a tanning agent has almost only advantages and he will be very reluctant to substitute it by any other tanning agent.
Unfortunately, chromium is a heavy metal and thus under environmental scrutiny. Some chromium compounds ar toxic and even carcinogenic. Thus legislation has developed to restrict the discharge of chromium into the waste water and into dolid wastes. Consequently the tanner is obliged to undertake appropriate actions.
In the following a short excursion on the legislation on chromium will be given, the sources of discharge from the tannery and measures for restricting it will be discused and then the relevance of chromium as an environmental hazard will be estimated.

3. Sources of discharge of chromium into tannery effluents.

Lacort, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : p. 114-121 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The future of the tanning industry is concerned fundamentally with three areas : (a) raw materials, (b) energy and (c) environment. With regard to raw materials the trend is towards making the fullest possible use of these products, which involves the processing of all by-products of the tanning industry.
In this work a pilot plant for the treatment of the different by-products of the tanning industry has been devised. The essential chemical process is based on the oxidising action by hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline medium of the chrome (III) present in the by-products, which permits the formation of inter and intrafibrilar peroxochromate compounds which have great oxidising capacity. By adjusting the amount of hydroxyl ions in the bath, the amount of hydrogen peroxide and the volume of the bath ; we may obtain either, the total solubilization of the by-products, or a dechroming effect, whilst maintaining the original macromolecular fibrous structure. Furthermore, the chemical process of dechroming is without doubt of great importance due to the overall volume of chromed by-products generated by mechanical operations, such as : splitting, shaving, and trimming are chrome tanned. For this reason, we sought to produce a collagenic material with unchanged physico-chemical characteristics and with a zero chrome level.
To this end, we made an optimization study of the Box-Behnken type to enable us to study the most signficant variables that intervene in this process and, to allow us to obtain the optimum conditions in order to achieve an end product with a zero chrome level. Thus, this represents new openings for the application of chromed by-products in the fields of medicine, food, cosmetics with a substantial increase in the added value of the recovered final product.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_ZqN-yqBr8i5JD2Mgp8k5zaJjeGR5u3Z/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8682

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This study attempts to clarify the effect of straining in the conservation of mink and blue fox skins on their length, contraction in dressing, and their general fur characteristics.
80 blue fox and 88 scan black mink skins were divided into four groups each and submitted to the following experimental treatments before fixing them onto stretching boards and drying : no straining, manual straining (muscle power), straining with a load of 200N and a load of 400N. The skins were measured for their initial fresh length, for dried length, and also for dressed length. The fur characteristics were evaluated in the dried raw skin state after 3 months storage before dressing.
The length of the raw skins increased with increased straining load in minks and blue foxes. Contraction of the skins in the dressing process was also the more pronounced the stronger the strain had been, but all of the skins returned to their initial fresh length. In blue foxes, the fur characteristics were significantly affected by straining. Colour purity, mass and quality class deteriorated when the straining load was raised. In minks, straining did not affect fur quality in the dried raw skin state, but nearly half of the skins strained with the strongest load appeared to be shapeless and pouch-like after dressing.
The fact that pricing at auctions is determined by skin size has brought a temptation to 'create' more length in conservation. This leads, however, to an undesirable deterioration of skin elasticity in dressing, but it should be even and kept with reasonable limits, or the fibre structure of the skins will be permanently damaged.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rQ6AXdLqZCi8ljX47kszRAFa9-0dbo3U/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8686

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The author has investigated the incidence of demodecosis (bubble) in sheep, correlated it to climatic factors and contrasted the severity of the disease in sheep with that in goats as reported by other workers. Evidence is put forward for infestation of the foetus with subsequent development after birth.
The evidence for the latter point conflicts with established knowledge and it may be claimed that the techniques used cannot demonstratec clinical infestation after birth. The counter comments and opinions of two other authorities are included in the conclusions to the work.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ta9zuq6Rz8nshtM5_gq-chYKW5G4tnkB/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8688

Titre : In defence of chrome tannage Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : R. Grant Darrie, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : p. 140-144 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanneries of the future will not only make products of the highest quality to meet customer expectations but operate also to the highest standards of environmental management of lquid and solid wastes.
Chrome tanned products command around 90 % of the market based on a strong quality and economics lead over alternatives.
The most effect defence strategy is to take significant initiative by addressing and resolving the areas of relative or potential weakness rather than indulging in any preoccupation over weakness of competitors.
As environmental regulatory standards tighten, the problem of addressing liquid and solid waste issues is not peculiar to chrome tanning operations except that higher standards of treatment and some potential relative limitations may apply to chrome based activities.
Liquid waste minimisation is an essential precursor to treatment using conventional technology and equipment to yield a final effluent discharge of acceptable quality together with a chromium concentrate suitable for processing and recycle.
Potential solutions to solid waste disposal problems are available via participation of a primary chromium chemicals producer or by a recently published enzymatic process which can also produce a chromium stream suitable for recycle within the tanning process.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Uniaxial strain of varying magnitude was applied to skins of male and female blue fox (Alopex lagopus) and male scan black mink (Mustela vison) in the conservation process. Effects of the strain along the line of the backbone on physical characteristics, i.e. elongation at break, breaking load, breaking energy and tensile strength were investigated for a number of selected leather samples by using a previously reported special sampling set system. According to the results obtained in this work the mechanical strain has a considerable effect on the physical characteristics of fox leather. The effect is not so clear in the case of strained mink leather.
On the basis of the results obtained in this work it is concluded that fox and mink leather can be strained with a load of 400 N. Even in this case the breaking load remains a high enough value to meet the lower acceptable value for breaking load. Straining with a load of 400 N along the line of the backbone only to some extent homogenizes the tensile and elongation behavior of the leather with respect to the transverse direction.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanneries are increasingly having to comply with numerical limits on the concentrations of air pollutants within the tannery on saftey grounds and externally on environmental grounds.
These developments will be reviewed in relation to their impact on production costs and acceptable process technologies.
Particular attention will be given to reducing the evolution of ammonia, amides, mercaptans and sulphides during beamhouse operations, and emission of volatile organic carbon compounds (VOCs) and particulate in finishing and other operations.
Arrestment technology and costs will be used as a baseline on which to assess the cost ceilings for alternative process chemicals or equipment with detailed consideration being given to the potential for water-based finishing systems applied by contact transfer. Water-diluable lacquers are unlikely to provide an option which will avoid the use of solvent arrestment equipment. Many of the cross-linking agents currently used to improve performance of top coats introduced health hazards for operatives and more attention will have to be given to identifying safer but effective products.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1znUCf2AuvXkmA2mLpa4nmcO0sqfyH6V_/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8691

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Masked chromium solutions contain a great variety of different complexes which are able to combine selectively with collagen. The changes in the composition of such solutions has been investigated by ion-exchange chromatography. Amongst the formato and acetatochromium complexes, complexes with charges corresponding to +2 and +3 had high affinity for collagen at high pH. Compared with the acetatochromium complexes, formatochromium complexes had considerably higher affinity. Oxalatochromium complexes corresponding to monooxalatochromium had affinities similar to that of the acetatochromium complexes. Anionic acetato and oxalatochromate complexes had very low affinity. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A study into the use of nonionic surfactants for the removal of natural grease from the skin of Australian woolly sheepskin in an aqueous medium has been made. The study has assessed the effects of nonionic surfactant structure, concentration, treatment time, and temperature. It was found that degreasing efficiency is highly dependent on the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of the surfactant, with a HLB range for optimum degreasing performance of 13.5-14.5 being identified. Blended surfactants were found to be no more effective than single component products of the same HLB. Titre : Chitosan in leather production. Part 1 : Interaction of chitosan with hide powder and lightly retanned leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen M. Burkinshaw, Auteur ; M. F. Karim, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : 203-209 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The chemistry of chitosan together with some aspects of its applications have been reviewed. The shrinkage temperature of hide powder was found to be increased by treatment with the polyaminosaccharide which may be due either to the formation of cross-links between the polymer and the hide fibre or the physical presence of the high molecular weight polymer within the substrate. The rate and extent of uptake of C.I. Acid yellow 83 onto chrome tanned hide powder were increased by means of pretreatment with chitosan as a result of the provision, by the cationic polymer, of additional dye sites within the substrate. Enhancement of dye uptake was greater when pretreatment had been carried out prior to chrome tanning which may be attributable to chelation of chromium by the polyaminosaccharide. The perspiration fastness of C.I. acid red 249 on lightly retanned leather was increased by means of an aftertreatment with chitosan which can be attributed to the formation of an insoluble, large molecular size, dye-chitosan complex.
