Titre : Chitosan in leather production. Part 1 : Interaction of chitosan with hide powder and lightly retanned leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen M. Burkinshaw, Auteur ; M. F. Karim, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : 203-209 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The chemistry of chitosan together with some aspects of its applications have been reviewed. The shrinkage temperature of hide powder was found to be increased by treatment with the polyaminosaccharide which may be due either to the formation of cross-links between the polymer and the hide fibre or the physical presence of the high molecular weight polymer within the substrate. The rate and extent of uptake of C.I. Acid yellow 83 onto chrome tanned hide powder were increased by means of pretreatment with chitosan as a result of the provision, by the cationic polymer, of additional dye sites within the substrate. Enhancement of dye uptake was greater when pretreatment had been carried out prior to chrome tanning which may be attributable to chelation of chromium by the polyaminosaccharide. The perspiration fastness of C.I. acid red 249 on lightly retanned leather was increased by means of an aftertreatment with chitosan which can be attributed to the formation of an insoluble, large molecular size, dye-chitosan complex. Titre : Chitosan in leather production. Part 2 : Further studies of the dyeing behaviour of chitosan treated leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen M. Burkinshaw, Auteur ; M. F. Karim, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Article en page(s) : p. 11-16 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The rate and extent of uptake of C. I. acid yellow 83 onto chrome grain leather were enhanced by means of pretreatment with chitosan, the extent of this enhancement being greater for chitosan formate than for chitosan acetate. The pH of application of the polyaminosaccharide had a marked effect upon adsorption of C. I. acid yellow 83 with pH 4 yielding maximum dye uptake ; pretreatment also improved the dry cleaning fastness of the dye on chrome grain leather. Optical micrographs of the grain side of chrome grain leather which had been pretreated with chitosan and dyed using C. I. acid yellow 83 showed the presence of a distinct dye-chitosan "layer" situated at the fibre surface. SEM micrographs revealed that pretreatment also improved the fullness of the leather. Pretreatment with the cationic polymer was found to reduce both the rate and extent of uptake of C. I. acid brown 75 and C. I. acid direct 106 onto chrome grain leather possibly as a result of the high substantivity and low diffusional power of the two dyes. Titre : Chitosan in leather production. Part 3 : Build-up properties of chitosan pretreated full-chrome and heavily retanned leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen M. Burkinshaw, Auteur ; M. F. Karim, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Article en page(s) : p. 54-57 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The extent of uptake of C. I. acid yellow 83 onto full chrome and heavily retanned chrome grain leather was enhanced by means of pretreatment with chitosan. The dyed pretreated samples were of a similar, but cleaner colour than their dyed, untreated counterparts. Pretreatment also enhanced the fulness and handle of both dyed substrates. Optical microscopy revealed that the polyaminosaccharide penetrated to the interior of the retanned leather. Titre : Chitosan in leather production, part 4 : The enhancement of uptake of anionic dyes on heavily retanned leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen M. Burkinshaw, Auteur ; M. F. Karim, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Article en page(s) : p. 132-136 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The extent of uptake of four non-metallised acid dyes onto heavily retanned chrome grain leather was enhanced by means of pretreatment with chitosan formate ; pretreatment also enhanced thefullness and handle of the dyed substrates. Optical microscopic evidence suggests that the polyaminosaccharide may be deposited mainly at the surface of the substrate and that enhanced dye uputake occurs predominantly onto this surface layer of chitosan. The extent of intensification of shade of C. I. acid brown 75 obtained by pretreatment with the polymer was similar to that secured using three typical, commercial cationic agents. Titre : Chitosan in leather production Titre original : Part 5 : The enhancement of uptake of direct dyes and sulphur dyes on heavily retanned leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen M. Burkinshaw, Auteur ; M. F. Karim, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Article en page(s) : p. 205-209 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The extent of uptake of C.I Solubilised Sulphur Black 1, C.I Direct Blue 106 and C.I Direct Black 155 onto heavily retanned chrome grain leather was enhanced by pretreatment with chitosan formate. The dyed pretreated samples were of a similar, but deeper colour and possessed superior fullness and handle to their dyed, untreated counterparts. Optical microscopy suggests that the extent to which the intensified shade extents within the pretreated leather is determined by substantivity and diffusional behavior of the dye within a layer of chitosan located at the surface of the substrate.
