The traditional role of coatings is that of protecting and improving the aesthetic quality of wood. Sophisticated codes, containing products names, lot numbers or other information can now be included in coatings and used for quality-control or authentication purposes. One of the most interesting consequences of this innovation is that coatings, or even coated products, can now be tagged for the entire lifetime of the product. This was considered to be of great interest by the companies involved in the project, especially in the event of claims resulting from in-use faults, certification and warranty procedures. Coatings for the protection of wood for outdoor use are complex systems where different properties are balanced in order to confer adequate resistance against deterioration induced by a variety of weathering factors. The coating users are increasingly sensitive to objective proof of the efficacy of coating products. The role of test reports according to EN 927 and certifications based on this European standard represent growing evidence of this concern. While the various technical aspects are of great importance, warranties represent the main area of interest in marketing campaigns and in contracts between coating producers and users. The most important aspect of a warranty is generally the number of year for which the coating producer assumes responsability for any defect causedby 'normal weathering' of the coated product. In the event of a claim, the onus is on the producer to prove that the whole process has been carried out properly, but the crucial question is really whether it can be proved that all the products forming the coating system are those for which the warranty was granted. Powder coatings represent just 7% of the worldwide coatings market but by most industry estimates, this US$4bn industry has been successful in replacing liquid coatings in a number of key markets including appliances, wood, metal and even automotive coatings. Powder coatings are used mainly in the durable-goods markets, including motor vehicules, appliances, house wares, furniture, industrial machinery and lawn and garden equipement. The automotive industry offers excellent propects for powder coatings, particularly in the new applications such as exterior primer and clear coats. Additionally, the appearance of consumer good is trend-led and the proportion of brightly coloured powder coatings is increasing as retailers differentiate their goods.
