Mostly, the items are made of plastic that has been given the corresponding look – frequently by means of galvanizing, but also by means of modern chrome substitute procedures such as PVD, in-mold labelling or spray painting. For different component geometries, one or the other process is recommended. Note de contenu : - Real galvanizing and alternatives for "partial design"

Peinture poudre -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The occurrence of pinholes in the powder coating of hot-dipped galvanized steel items is investigated. A polyester powder resin crosslinked with triglycidylisocyanurate was used as a model system. The effects of a rheological modifier on the curing process and on the cured material were investigated. The effect of the substrate was studied by using steel with two different silicon contents. The results show that pinholes are likely to appear if the surface's silicon confent lies in a given range, which in turn will produce a rough zinc surface. Phosphates and silanes were used as conversion coatings, but neither had an effect on the occurrence of pinholes. The rheological modifier improves the flow properties and helps to solve most pinhole problems. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Instrumentation - Materials - Methods

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Zn-based coatings are extensively used for the protection of steel structures. Efforts toward further enhancement in the corrosion resistance performance of Zn coatings are therefore an area of continued interest. In this work, Zn-graphene oxide (Zn-GO) composite coatings containing different volume fractions of GO were electrodeposited on mild steel substrates using an electrolyte bath with different concentrations of dispersed graphene oxide. The electrodeposition parameters used yielded compact and crack-free morphology for all the coatings. Incorporation of GO led to a refinement of the Zn crystallites in the coating matrix. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements clearly showed that all the Zn-GO composite coatings exhibited higher corrosion resistance performance when compared to the pristine Zn coatings, and further, the corrosion rate decreased with the increase in the volume fraction of the GO in the composite coatings. In this study, large eddy simulation (LES) was employed to determine the effect of lower velocity symmetric auxiliary jets on main jet stabilization and coating thickness reduction during the gas jet wiping process. For validation purposes, experimental measurements of coating thickness were also carried out for the prediction of final coating thickness via a novel prototype multi-slot air knife used as the wiping actuator. Good agreement was found between the experimental measurements and model predictions for the coating weight, which also confirmed the applicability of the Elsaadawy et al.1 model for the prediction of final coating weight for the multi-slot air knife geometry used. It was found that the jet flapping observed during single jet wiping could be prevented through use of the multi-slot air knife operating with lower velocity symmetric auxiliary jets (Rea/Rem = 0.45) situated on both sides of the main jet. The auxiliary jets modified the flow field in the main jet shear layer and diminished the formation of alternating vortices, which are the main cause of jet flow oscillations. As a result, a stabilized impinging flow with a longer potential core was found for the multi-slot jet configuration. This led to increased pressure gradient and increased shear stresses in the vicinity of the wiping region and, consequently, lower coating weights were obtained through use of the multi-slot air knife compared to the conventional single slot jet. ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Galvanizing presents many challenges to painting operations. While the zinc coating can add substantial life to steel surfaces, its surface chemistry and electrochemical activity can result in conditions leading to adhesion failures of applied organic coatings. The key to successful painting lies in recognizing the many surface conditions presented by new and weathered galvanizing and then employing effective cleaning operations to mitigate their effect. Success is ultimately achieved by selecting coating products that will develop a strong and enduring bond to the galvanized surface. Note de contenu : - WHAT IS GALVANIZING ?
