A distinction is made between pigment preparations and tinting pastes. In the case of pigment preparations, adjustment to colour strength is by weight; in the case of tinting pastes it is by volume, and these pastes offer ideal conditions for use in tinting systems.It is the economic aspects which, ultimately are critical in the decision on industrial tinting systems. This paper will deal with the composition of pigment pastes having near-universal compatibility in the sovent borne coatings. A typical feature of the quality definitionis its complex, generalized character, when various characteristics of a product, or a process are taken into account and then summed up in by a subjective term, such as "good", "excellent" etc. Qualimetry is a system, intended for the quantitative evaluation of product quality. In order to be applicable to a certain types of industrial products such as, motor vehicles, apparel, food, organic coatings etc., a specific system of raiting and ranks, on the basis of qualimetry philosophy, has to be developped. This system comprises specialized characteristics, coefficients and functions which render it applicable to certain types of industrial products. Probably the most important advantage claimed for limewash in such applications is the ability of the applied coating to alow aged building fabrics to "breathe" absorbed moisture, thus minimising damage due to water entrapment. However notwithstanding the perceived value of "breating" properties there is very little published information on the water vapour transmission of limewash to enable users to make an informed choice on product selection. In response to this need, the Building Research Establishement has developed a test method for determining the permeability characteristics of limewashes. This test is based on a standard dish' technique widely used for measuring the moisture permeability of modern polymeric surface coatings. With some modification, the test has been found to be suitable for measuring the permeability of different types of limewash.
