Additionally the inks have to meet the specific needs of a wide wariety of substrates udes in publication and packaging printing-papers, carton boards, metals and plastics - also to be compatible with the significant advances in press machinery and associated aquipment technology.
There are continuing constraints brought about by ever increasing pressures of legislation. Much of this concerns environmental issues, aspects of health and safety and the welter of labelling, packaging and consumer protection regulations.
Then there have been the continuing uncertainties in the economic climate worldwide. All the above mentioned factors have a bearing on progress.

In 1937 Chester Carlton patented a system of printing that relied on the principles of electrostatics to transfer ink to paper. There was no pressure or impaction involved in the production of the print. The process became known as Xerography and the era of non-impact printing was born. Xerography is now more generally known as Electrophotography ant the device is described as a machine or engine rather than a printing press. Each of these processes has its requirements. One of these concerns the nature of the inks being deposited. Although many of the papers on ink characterisation are of general interest, relatively little coverage has been specifically given to speciality ink formulations and their application.
One such example is that of the formulation, composition, nature and behaviour of writing fluids for use in the various types of pens and markers available today. These inks are designed with a particular delivery system in mind. Typical examples are the fountain pen, the ball-point pen, the felt-tip pen and roller ball pen types. Each delivery system performs the "printing operation" in a particular way i.e transfers ink from the supply to the substrate. It therefore follows that, to attain performance, each delivery system makes a number of highly specific and very different demands on the appropriate writing fluid. It is certainly an area worthy of study as the market for writing instruments was worth $3.5 billion in 1985 and even more today.Note de contenu : - Delivery systems

Whilst there may be little obvious immediate benefit of their implementation to those living in the neighbourhood of VOC emitting factories, what does make an immediate impact is odour emission and particulary any changes in odour.
The UK Environmental Protection Act requires that the aim should be that all emissions are free from offensive odour outside the process boundary , as perceived by the local authority Inspector'.
This paper is concerned with the emissions to atmosphere, and in particular odour emissions, from the lacquering processes associated with two-piece beer and beverage can manufacture. Despite steady progress in VOC reduction from such processes by the adoption of water-borne lacquer systems, odour nuisance complaints do occur from time to time.
