Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Herein are the results of studies of mechanical properties and shrinkage temperature of cowhide leather tanned with modified glutaraldehyde and chrome. The tests were carried out on samples cut from both kinds of leather parallel and perpendicular to the backbone. The aim of these studies was determining whether the sample orientation to the backbone, thus leather anisotropic properties defined by its tensile strength and ultimate extension, has an effect on shrinkage temperature and kinetics of this process.
Mechanical properties were tested according to PN-EN ISO 3376:2012 Leather – Physical and mechanical tests – Determination of tensile strength and percentage extension. The conditions for shrinkage temperature measurements were set according to guidelines specified in PN-EN ISO 3380:2015-11 Leather – Physical and mechanical tests – Determination of shrinkage temperature up to 100°C. The experiment was carried out by using an instrument of our own design enabling automatic recording of leather specimen length changes during measurement.
The results of mechanical tests allowed the determination of the degree of differentiation of obtained tensile strength and ultimate extension values depending on test sample orientation to the backbone. For leather tanned with modified glutaraldehyde the coefficient of variation with respect to tensile strength in both directions was 0.31, while for chrome tanned leather was 0.44. The coefficient of variation for ultimate extension calculated for both directions was 0.55 and 0.42 for glutaraldehyde and chrome tanned leathers, respectively.
The slope of obtained regression lines was compared to find any statistically significant differences in leather shrinkage rate depending on orientation to the backbone. The results of analyses performed for two differently tanned leathers show no statistically significant differences in shrinkage rate depending on cut orientation. Thus, anisotropy of mechanical properties of leather samples under investigation does not affect both shrinkage temperature and the rate of this process.Note de contenu : - MATERIAL

To prove validity, the new method is directly compared to the face-to-face shear test. In this comparison, the new method delivers test results in less time with less variability and higher reproducibility than the face-to-face test. An analysis of the data presented in the report yields an R2 adjusted correlation of 77.2 percent between the two tests for all tape sample test values ans 9.10 percent for those sample test values with face-to-face shear values greater than 100 minutes. [article]
Titre : Effect of a-amylase treatment on the tensile properties of steerhide and leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Warren Melville, Auteur ; Clara Deasy, Auteur Année de publication : 1977 Article en page(s) : p. 216-229 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The effect of α-amylase treatment on the tensile properties of steerhide and leather was examined.
Bacterial or fungal α-amylase in acetate buffer at pH 5.6 and 35°C. digests carbohydrte-containing components (groud substance) from fresh steerhide and from fresh lime/sulfide unhaired steerhide, forming reducing substances. The α-amylase treatment did not affect the load to break of fresh steerhide, corium split, or lime/sulfide unhaired steerhide when they were tested wet. There was also no increase inload to break of unfatliquored wet blue leather that had received the α-amylase treatment. However, similar dry blue leather specimens showed a significantly higher load to break if enzyme-treated. This effect appears to be due to a more complete removal of ground substance during the enzyme treatment, so that the cementing action of the ground substance on the collagen fibers is decreased ; this cementing action is greater in the dry leather specimens than in the wet.
When α-amylase-treated, chrome-tanned steerhide was atliquored and tested dry, there was an increase in the load to break compared to that of similarly treated stock that had not received the α-amylase treatment. Microscopic examination showed that greater penetration of fatliquor had occured in the enzyme-treated stock, a reflection of greater removal of ground substance.
The α-amylase treatment had no effect on the mirostructure of the steerhide. It did not affect the penetration and deposition of chrome during tannage, as was shown by microincineration studies.Note de contenu : - Materials and methods

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Finishing is the process in which a polymeric coating is applied in order to improve the appearance and resistance of leather products. The applications at this stage greatly affect the use and appeal of the final products. In this study, the effect of different coating compositions on the physico-mechanical properties of leather was investigated. For this purpose, three different types of finishing formulations including semi-aniline, lightly pigmented and opaque finishes having different covering powers rated from light to heavy, respectively, were applied to the leathers and results were compared with uncoated counterparts. The findings of the study revealed that the application of lightly pigmented finishing statistically increased the tensile strength, single and double edge tear loads, and stitch tear resistance of the leather to a large extent. Semi-aniline and opaque finishing gave lower or, in some cases, statistically insignificant increases in the physico-mechanical properties of the leathers.
