However, latex paints thickened with cellulosics could not provide paint films, which are richer in looks and have high aesthetic appeal. Continuous research in order to overcome these deficiencies in cellulosics, led to the evolution of new generation thickeners termed as Associative Thickeners. These thickeners have out-performed cellulosics in many aspects and have been well accepted by the industry. Various aspects which resulted in changing the trend from use of cellulosic to associative thickeners are reviewed in this paper. Also, factors governing the performance of the above thickeners and latex paints based on them are discussed at length. Note de contenu : - ROLE OF THICKENERS IN LATEX PAINTS

The novolac epoxy resins werepreparedby using three different ratios ofphenol to formaldehyde. The films of prepared epoxy esters with different oil lengths, were evaluated for various performance tests and were compared with those of bisphenol-A based epoxy resin. All the films dried faster and took a maximum of 13 hrs to dry tack free. Epoxy esters prepared from novolac epoxy resins having higher phenol to formaldehyde ratios showed better scratch hardness than those with lower ratios. Also, epoxy esters with shortest oil length possessed best scratch hardness. All the films were highly flexible. The studies showed that alkali resistance of epoxy esters is slightly better than water resistance. The water resistance increased with the increase in the oil length and also with increase in the phenol to formaldehyde ratio in novolac epoxy resins. In the case of alkali resistance, it increased with the increase in phenol - formaldehyde ratio and it decreased with the increase in oil length. The acid resistance of all the samples were excellent.
