An experimental investigation was carried out into the role of the solvent on the drying characteristics, conductivity, and process consistency in screen printed carbon pastes. Four materials with solvent boiling points between 166 and 219°C were deposited at film thickness between 6 and 16 μm, and the sheet resistance and film thickness were measured after successive passes through an industrial dryer operating with an air temperature of 155°C. Sheet resistances of 14 Ω/sq. were obtained with the thicker films while thinner films produced a sheet resistance of 46 Ω/sq. Thinner films achieved a stable resistivity within a 2.5-min residence time, while the thicker films required a residence time in excess of 12.5 min to achieve a stable resistivity. As well as prolonging drying times, the higher boiling point increased the resistivity of the cured film. It is postulated that the lower resistance of the faster drying materials is a result of film stressing increasing inter particle contact. Process models indicate that multiple thin layers are a more efficient means of manufacture for the process parameters examined.

Souplesse (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Over the past few years, the challenges of globalisation, consolidation and economical point of view have meant that manufacturers of epoxy formulations have to constantly improve their capability to meet the needs of customers. An active area for advancement is that of epoxy and polyamide resin with castor oil. Generally, people working in the coating industries are familiar with castor oil, but this paper provides information on the new use of castor oil in epoxy and polyamide resin. This novel product (castor oil-modified epoxy resin/castor oil-modified polyamide) provides a previously unattainable combination and improved flexibility and toughness to a variety of ambient cure applications. This communication will review the performance of these castor oil-modified epoxy and polyamide resin surface coatings and adhesives. Based on the results of this study, these systems offer some advantages without much affecting the traditional properties of epoxy and polyamide resin in a variety of applications.

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Titanium dioxide (TiO2)/conducting polymers composite pigments were synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization technique in a simple and eco-friendly manner. These composite pigments were characterized for morphology by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, for conductivity by four point probe and conductive-atomic force microscopy, for elemental composition by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and for chemical composition by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Three different types of composite pigments were synthesized, namely TiO2/polypyrrole composite pigment, TiO2/polypyrrole composite pigment doped with tungstate anion, and TiO2/polyaniline composite pigment. Core and shell morphology was obtained for TiO2/polypyrrole composite pigment and TiO2/polypyrrole composite pigment doped with tungstate anion. Coatings based on these pigments were formulated and applied on a cold rolled steel substrate. Constant immersion in 5% sodium chloride was employed for studying the corrosion resistance offered by composite pigments-based coatings. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization technique. EIS results demonstrated increased corrosion protection for the core and shell TiO2/polypyrrole composite, TiO2/polypyrrole (tungstate doped) composite, and TiO2/polyaniline composite. Additionally, potentiodynamic scan results demonstrated passivation achieved by synthesized composite pigments-based coatings, suggesting improved corrosion protection.
