An investigation into the chemical and physical changes that occur during paint aging has revealed the mechanism of this instability. The role of the TiO2 pigment grade was further explored, providing an understanding of the gel mechanism and stability performance. Addition of hard phase latex to the soft film forming latex significantly improved block resistance, even at blend ratios as low as 70/30. Film properties were not sacrificed, except at high concentrations of the hard phase (50/50). For a given blend ratio, the particle size ratio had a dramatic effect on the block resistance. For a 70/30 blend ratio, the block resistance of a blend with Rsoft/Rhard = 4.0 was equivalent to that of a control latex having the same overall composition, but with a minimum film temperature 20°C higher than the blend. The phenomenon can be explained in terms of the bulk and surface contributions to adhesion. The hard phase increases the elastic modulus (G') of the film. The magnitude of G' was found to increase with increasing Rsoft/Rhard, an effect that is consistent with percolation theory. The effect of particle size ratio on the surface contribution to adhesion can be explained by particle packing. Visual models indicate that a high apparent surface concentration of hard particles would be expected for a large value of Rsoft/Rhard, given ideal packing conditions. This effect was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The author discusses a proven method for dispersing fumed metal oxides down to individual particles in water for efficient utilisation in polymer latex systems.
Fumed silica and fumed alumina are examples of nanoscale inorganic additives for waterborne (WB) polymer film and coating systems. Fumed metal oxides can often be difficult to work with because they exist mostly as high surface area powdery agglomerates that are not easily separated or dispersed into individual particels. Cabot's Cab-O-Sperse colloidal scale dispersions are available in a range of concentrations, particle sizes, surface charges and different pH ranges for use in a wide variety of applications. Specifically, Cab-O-Sperse fumed metal oxide particle dispersions provide formulationflexibility to waterborne coatings that can help balance wet formulation processing needs with coating optical, mechanical and chemical performance demands. These dispersions provide a convenient waterborne vehicle for nanocomposite materials.Note de contenu : - State of dispersion

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study illustrates the capabilities of a nanoindentation/nanoscratch tester to assess mechanical and tribological properties of coating films. Properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, mar and scratch resistance, and critical force for cracking can be accurately measured. Operation of the Nano-Indenter is described in detail. A scanning probe microscope (SPM) is shown to be a valuable supplement to the Nano-Indenter. Well-characterized thermoset acrylic clearcoats and thermoplastic latex films were studied. For the first time, operating parameters are described for measurement of relatively soft coatings, such as films cast from a latex with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 8°C. Thus, the method is made available for study of most types of coatings. The method can easily discriminate between coatings with different Tgs and crosslink densities. Once operating parameters are established, it takes about 10 minutes for an indentation test and 10 minutes for a scratch test with the Nano-Indenter, and with further automation this time could be reduced. Each indtntation test accurately measures hardness and elastic modulus as a function of depth within the coating, and each scratch test provides additional insight into the material's behavior. The method is sensitive to small changes in polymer composition and formulation, and results are highly reproducible.
