Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : BLC has developed a method for the non-destructive measurement of leather softness ; the portable device works on a similar principle to the lastometer, clamping and applying a load to the leather with the resultant distension giving an indication of leather softness. The load applied is typically in the order of 500 g thereby not causing any damage to the leathers.

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This research concerns an investigation into the impregnation of leather with a polyurethane emulsion as a means of strengthening the grain layer and the grain - corium junction. Since three quaters of the leather produced is used for the manufacture of shoes, a possible application of this research could be the development of direct sticking of shoe uppers to soles without the need for thr current abrasion process.
It was hypothesized tha modification of the leather fiber surface properties to more closely match the polyurethane impregnant would result in an increase in leather strength. Also investigated was the inter-laboratory variation of the instruments tested.
Results show that as the softness range of a pack of leathers narrows, the variation of softness rankings by assessors increases. The average of the rankings of nine assessors was used to assess the ability of each instrument to measure leather softness. The instrument which performed the best in this trial was the BLC's ST300 softness tester. Tannage Résumé : An investigation has been carried out on the uptake, penetration into wet blue and the dispersion in the tannery vessel of the fungicide Kathon XB2-ERB. The trial also followed the fate of the chemical through subsequent processing of the wet blue to the dyed crust stage.
Kathon XB2-ERB is a microemulsion of the active ingredient 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one. It was found that the fungicide was rapidly taken up by the wet blue, but did not penetrate uniformly into the cross-section. A larger inter hide variation of fungicide concentrations was found, while intra hide variation was small. About 30% of the active ingredient was washed from the treated leather during subsequent processing.
