Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper describes the use of novel water-dispersible blocked polyisocyanate cross-linkers utilising 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (DMP) as the blocking agent. When formulated with acrylic emulsions containing isocyanate reactive hydroxyl groups, these will produce one component, heat curable coatings with final properties comparable to solvent-based systems. The DMP blocked polyisocyanates will cure at temperatures as low as 120 to 130°C when stoved for 30 min using standard urethane catalysts or 10 min using a novel catalyst. Coatings formulated from these cross-linkers also show potential for OEM automotive clearcoats, general industrial metals and temperature sensitive substrates, such as plastics. Rapid curing, resistance to weathering and corrosion and the absence of solvents are among the advantages offered by polyurea systems. Thanks to the availability of a wide range of isocyanate and amine components, formulations may be tailored to specific applications. Out-standing material properties and developments in spraying technology mean that there are many other conceivable applications for polyurea spray coatings which are already under investigation. The coatings are based on proprietary acetoacetoxy-functional polymers which can be conveniently made via multi-stage emulsion polymerization. They are especially useful in high quality furniture applications, where they offer fast dry combined with hardness, early stackability, high film clarity, luster, and superior chemical resistance. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This work is based on an outgrowth of polymerization research aimed at producing a thioglycolate telechelic polymer, that is, a polymer with a thioglycolate ether at each end. However, it demonstrates the simplicity and ease generally required of a potentially commercially viable process for production of a corrosion inhibitor. Free radical synthesis of styrene/thioglycolate adducts shows them to be outstanding corrosion inhibitors either as the sodium salt or the non-ionic ethylene glycol half ester. As this might be a cheap, fast and easily performed synthesis, this route could lead to a commercially viable familiy of new corrosion inhibitor structures.
