Since 1988, Renner Herrmann - a Brazilian holding company that operates in South America in the field of industrial and automotive OEM coatings, etc. - has directed efforts towards the generation of advanced technologies for production processes. The research center, located in Gravataí, Brazil, has developed the paint production concept of continuous production system, where all the product characteristics are analyzed and corrected on-line and in real time through advanced tuning control. Reaction engineering for emulsion polymerization requires understanding of fluid dynamics and mixing, heat transfer, process monitoring, colloid science, microeconomics and the mechanisms and kinetics of the multiple chemical and physical reaction steps. Incorporating the developed knowledge in an integrated product process development effort would help to reduce costs, decrease time to market and increase product quality. Various types of reactors and their modification to satisfy the necessity of quality product have been reviewed in this paper.
