XénonIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As an external laboratory testing our formulations and customers’ samples, we perform weathering tests in a UV or xenon chamber, and the client, after receiving the report, will often ask "why is there no real world equivalent years?" In this article, we answer why there are no and will not be such conversion factors.
This article is intended to be a kind of guidance for project participants related to determining the durability of coatings assessed against accelerated artificial weathering using laboratory chambers. We want it to be a publication to be quoted for both our clients and others who often face such a question and do not have a clear answer.Note de contenu : - In what cases are weathering & lightfastness test used ?

Résistance aux conditions climatiquesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) are new generation materials widely used in outdoor conditions; however, the appearance and mechanical properties of WPCs change with exposure to weather. In this study, high-density polyethylene-based flat-pressed WPCs are reinforced with carbon and glass fibre-woven fabrics for uses where high mechanical properties are needed in outdoor conditions. For this purpose, WPCs are exposed to accelerated weathering conditions to determine the effect of weathering with and without reinforcement. The results show that, after weathering, colour changes are inevitable for WPCs. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform-infrared analysis reveals the changes in the matrix's chemical structure, illustrating the alterations in WPC surface characteristics. The mechanical properties of WPCs decrease as a result of photodegradation. However, the reinforced WPCs have higher mechanical properties than the control samples, despite extensive degradation. Carbon fibre (200 g/m2) achieved the greatest flexural strength and modulus of elasticity, 150% and 122% higher, respectively, than unreinforced WPCs. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows that, despite the intensive photodegradation on the surface, the integration of the matrix and woven fabrics was still strong. The surface erosion was observed with light microscopy. The visual appearance also exhibited some changes that occurred on the surface of WPCs. Résistance aux conditions climatiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : To meet the requirement of improved durability of alkyd resin for use in weatherwork paint for superstructure of ships, an attempt has been made to chemically modify a castor oil alkyd by graft copolymerization with methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate in view of their ability to provide polymers with good exterior durability. Characterization of the experimental resins, in respect to physical properties, was carried out using instruments such as a vapor pressure osmometer, rotational viscometer, universal tensile testing instrument (Instron 1123), and differential scanning calorimeter. Performance of the resins was evaluated using a fluorescent UV accelerated weatherometer and multi-head glossmeter. The results reveal substantial improvement in drying and weather resistance properties of castor oil alkyd on graft copolymerization with both methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate. The improvement in these properties is marginally superior in the case of MMA grafted alkyds. MMA modification also enhances the mechanical properties of the grafted castor oil alkyd. Revêtement monocoucheIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Protecting expensive machinery from corrosion is crucial and a key feature to extend their useful service life. However, processes that offer complete corrosion protection, such as cathodic dip coating, prove complex for large structures produced in small numbers, especially regarding size of the bath and cost of coating material. Researchers are exploring ways to replace welding with structural bonding of already coated construction modules. Note de contenu : - Adhesive bonding to avoid damage to coating
- Acrylate monocoats offer improved stability
- Experimental
- Highest baking temperature showed best corrosion resistance
- Strength of unaged and aged joints
- Corrosion creep influenced by ahesive
- Weather stability of acrylate coatings comparable to powder coatings
