Carbon fiber is increasingly preferred for its traditional composite features and benefits and—as the latest fashion trends show — its fantastic finished appearance. Composite materials can be used to make not only a catwalk, but designer accessories as well.
The use of composite materials is particularly prevalent in the aerospace and transportation market sector because composites offer high-strength performance while keeping component weight down, thereby enabling better fuel efficiency and improved performance. Adhesive bonding of these composites offers many benefits and is widely accepted.
Unlike mechanical fasteners, adhesives maintain the composite material’s structure by eliminating the need to drill holes or puncture the composite. An adhesive bond can unitize the two pieces so they will not rattle or vibrate independently, which leads to fatigue. Adhesives further contribute to weight reduction because they simply weigh less than mechanical fasteners. In addition, adhesives provide a seam-free, perfect aesthetic finish, so products can be color-matched to the substrate material.Note de contenu : - BONDING SYSTEMS : Methyl methacrylates - Surface-activated methyl methacrylates - Modified epoxies/MS polymers - Two-component urethanes

The technique involved the continuous addition of one monomer mixture into a stirred tank containing another monomer mixture. Their microstructure and properties were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and particle size analysis. 1H-NMR spectra show a gradual change in the chemical composition with the growth of molecular chains. The gradient polymer latexes, the instantaneous copolymer composition of which varies as the polymerization proceeds, are obtained. GPC analyses show that the aggregated molecular chain in the BA-centered latex particle experiences a process from dominant BA to MMA with changes in the monomer's feed composition during the polymerization. Particle size and TEM analyses show that the increasing latex size agrees well with the gradient growth pattern. DSC analyses show that the gradient latex particles exhibit only one broadened and ambiguous glass transition region. AFM analyses indicate no obvious microphase segregation occurs in the gradient latex particles, further verifying that the gradient microstructure is obtained. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Traditional waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has poor water resistance because of the incorporation of permanent hydrophilic groups, such as carboxyl group or ammonium salt, into polymer chains. Therefore, developing WPU with excellent water resistance and mechanical properties is highly desirable for industrial applications. In this study, CO2-triggered hydrophobic/hydrophilic switchable waterborne polyurethane–acrylate (WPUA) containing methyl methacrylate (MMA) units were designed and synthesized. The molecular structure, hydrophobic/hydrophilic switchable behavior, water resistance, and mechanical properties were systematically investigated and characterized. The WPUA with 10 wt% MMA exhibited a low water uptake (2.15 wt%) and linear swelling ratio (0.17 L%), as well as a high tensile strength (16.7 MPa) and modulus (85.9 MPa), which were much higher than those of the pristine WPU. This study indicated that the CO2-triggered WPUA dispersed stably as latex particles in water and possessed excellent water resistance and mechanical properties after the film formation. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Methylmethacrylate and styrene were copolymerized by suspension polymerization using water-acetone mixed solvents, keeping in view that this method would combine the advantages of solution and suspension (in water) polymerization in a number of ways to change the product properties suitable for coating and adhesive materials. The copolymers were characterised by infra-red (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The molecular weights of the copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatographic technique. Their thermal stability was studied using thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis.
RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Atmospheric pressure plasma jet polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was performed in order to deposit a PMMA-like coating on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). This study is a first step in the transfer from MMA plasma polymerization experiments previously performed in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor to a newly designed atmospheric pressure plasma jet. In this novel plasma setup, the substrate is not directly exposed to the plasma region, but placed in the plasma jet afterglow. The effect of several plasma jet process parameters on the coating properties was investigated using different surface characterization techniques such as XPS, FTIR, AFM, and OPS. Results show that the stationary deposition of PMMA-like thin films results in a radial gradient in surface chemistry, surface morphology, and coating thickness. Additionally, the coating properties were found to significantly depend on the monomer-containing gas flow rate. This observation is also confirmed by CFD modeling, which shows that the monomer-containing gas flow rate strongly influences the gas flow pattern of the plasma afterglow and therefore the final properties of the deposited PMMA-like film.
