They are produced today in considerably different physical states and possessing substantially dissimilar physical properties. They can be divided into three broad classes consisting of foams, coating systems, and millable systems. The millable types can be further divided into groups as cross-linkable rubbers, and thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. For adhesive and coating formulating, the thermoplastic types are most useful ; and it bas been our experience that the polyester urethanes give better adhesion than the polyether types. These polymers are compatible with a wide range of resins, making it possible to increase adhesion, abrasion, and plating or embossing properties. In addition, new finishing techniques are being used outside of the leather industry, which, at the present time, only have limited uses in leather finishing. I firmly believe, however, that as these new techniques are improved and modified they will take a strong position in leather finishing. Cast coatings, transfer coatings, lamination of urethane fims and foams, whether they be mecanical or chemical, have already found their place in finishing roll goods, in a continuous operation on poromerics, non-wovens, and fabrics. More work is required to adapt these systems to piece goods, such as side leather or splits, to overcome waste due to cutting and trimming, and to eliminate multile handling operations.
