Solidité de la couleurIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Dyeing is the important unit process in leather manufacturing, which adds value to the leather. Although formic acid is used for fixing of dyes in leather processing, difficulties do arise in fixation of certain dye stuffs. Further high quantities of formic acid used do create health issues and adds to high cost of production. Compounds such as formic acid, acetic acid, mixture of organic acids and quaternary ammonium compounds have been found to function as dye fixatives. The efficacy of these compounds to function as dye fixatives for various dye stuffs and substances either alone or along with formic acid has been studied in detail in this work. The physical and color characteristics of leather and spent liquor analysis have been carried out.

The use of exotic leathers from different animal sources has increased the demand in the leather market for various applications. Processing of these skins require a non-conventional approach in order to preserve the natural characteristics of the skin after converting into leather. The present work exploits a new raw material source for its utilization as exotic leather. An exceptional variety of star puffer fish was keyed out from Indian Ocean coast. Leather made out of this skin was unique from most of the exotic leathers. Unlike other fishes, skin surface morphology of this species is covered with calcified spines. These spines are aligned on dorsal and ventral sides. When they are converted into leather, spines get firmly anchored onto collagen matrix like caltrops. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) served as a tool to relate structural morphology of the leather and spine composition was analyzed using Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The developed exotic leather exhibited better mechanical properties and finds application in making high grip articles, therapeutic footwear and other niche products.

Tannage Résumé : Triphenodioxazine (TPDO) is a high-performance chromophore. Based on TPDO, five simultaneous or combined tanning-dyeing processes were undertaken with pickled sheep pelt. Process 1 utilized a simultaneous tanning-dyeing material named TPDO-GT, a reactive dyestuff with aldehyde reactive groups which was prepared by grafting TPDO to the backbone of a glutaraldehyde-like compound (GT). The other four processes were combinations of TPDO with gallic acid (GA) and Al (III), Fe (III) salts, through treating the pelt using a different adding order. The adding order of Process 2 was to treat the pelt with Al (III) salt first and then the mixture of (TPDO+GA); that of Process 3 was to add the mixture of (TPDO+GA) first and then the Al (III) salt; that of Process 4 was to add Fe (III) salt first and then the mixture of (TPDO+GA); that of Process 5 was to add the mixture of (TPDO+GA) first and then Fe (III) salt. Tanning-dyeing effects of the five processes were compared, and the results were as follows: For hydrothermal stability (Td from DSC analysis), 2 > 3 > 4 > 1 > 5; for colors, 1 was purple-red, 2 was dark purple, 3 was red brown, 4 was dark green, 5 was brown back; for washing fastness, 1 > 2 > 3 ≈ 4 > 5.
