Since the nanocomposite preparation method and conditions, and consequently, the resulting morphology play a critical role in the final properties, the effect of different process conditions such as time, temperature, and shear rate on the vulcanization, thermal and mechanical properties have been investigated. The morphology of nanocomposites, prepared at different melt-mixing conditions, was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Rheological, thermal and mechanical behaviors were investigated by moving die rheometer (MDR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile strength test respectively. Also, the crosslinking density has been measured for the nanocomposites. The best mechanical performance of clay/FKM nanocomposites was attained by optimization of the melt-mixing conditions. We achieved the following enhancements for FKM by clay incorporation: enhancement of tensile strength up to 70 %; elongation up to 94 %; and modulus up to 405 %. Process temperature was found to have a critical role in the final properties of the nanocomposites, while mixing residual time and shear rate had a moderate effect. The most desirable properties and curing behaviors, including highest maximum torques, cure rates, crosslinking densities, fast crosslinking kinetics, high intercalation and best improved tensile strengths, resulted with specific combination of melt-mixing parameters. Traitement coronaIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The electrical and mechanical properties of the epoxy alumina nanocomposites depend on the uniform dispersion of the nanofiller in the epoxy matrix. Epoxy alumina nanocomposites were prepared using 1, 3, and 5 wt% of alumina nanofiller, and electrical and mechanical properties were analyzed using experimental and modelling studies. Water droplet initiated corona inception voltage (CIV) was identified using fluorescence fiber technique and by Ultra High Frequency (UHF) technique, under AC and DC voltages. The CIV formed due to water droplet have reduced drastically with increase in number of droplets and fluorescent fiber technique found to be more sensitive to identify water droplet initiated discharges. A micro mechanical model was proposed to analyse the combined effect of the interphase and agglomeration properties of the alumina nanoparticles on the tensile strength of epoxy alumina nanocomposites. Variation in ϕagg, Eagg, and E were analysed by adopting the non-parametric distribution of alumina nanoparticles and Young’s modulus increased with the increment in the alumina nanofiller dispersion level. The presence of aggregated particles exhibits a negative effect on the tensile properties of nanocomposites.
StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : The minerals application in polymer industry is one of the solutions towards the modification of polymer properties. In this study, the micronized silica was used as filler into the polypropylene (PP) matrix to enhance its mechanical properties. Two compatibilizers; namely: styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) triblock copolymer and its grafted maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MA) were used and evaluated using statistical design of experiments. The results showed that the addition of silica to the PP matrix substantially improves the mechanical properties of the composite with a drop in strain measures. On the other hand, the addition of the compatibilizer enhances the interfacial bonding and smoothen the stresses transfer between filler particles and the polymeric matrix. Consequently, a remarkable improvement in impact strength and strain was noticed. The statistical analysis showed that the interaction between silica and compatibilizer plays a crucial role in determining the mechanical properties of the final composite. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this research paper, the effects of the combined compacting and back-injection process to produce back-injected self-reinforced composites on the mechanical properties of the self-reinforced composites (SRCs) are investigated. For this purpose, the parameters barrel temperature, time of injection and holding pressure were varied for the back injection. Tensile and bending tests were carried out on the SRCs. The results show that the mechanical properties depend to a large extent on the process parameters. The measured tensile strength varies between approx. 186 and 86 MPa, the stiffness between approx. 3500 and 2000 MPa. The flexural strength is measured between approx. 75 and 5 MPa, the flexural modulus between approx. 5480 and 650 MPa. Flexural tests are more suitable for evaluation of the consolidation, as tensile tests cannot evaluate the adhesion of the fabric layers to each other in the SRCs. Microscopic examinations show that consolidation by the back-injected melt can lead to smaller cross-sections in the SRCs compared to an area that was not back-injected. At high barrel temperatures, melting of individual fabric layers can occur, which explains, among other things, the drop in the mechanical properties of the SRCs.
